Er - those chicken breasts (and anything around that price) will not have "water pumped in". Not that they actually "pump" water in at all.

Chicken has become so cheap with intensive rearing it's actually quite difficult to buy fresh chicken with added water.

The only place you will find it is in the big bags of frozen fillets, but in itself is no guarantee of added water.

Waitrose - no added water

https://www.waitrose.com/ecom/produ...ish-chicken-breast-fillets/546481-77253-77254

Sainsbury - with added water

https://www.sainsburys.co.uk/gol-ui...ns---thighs/valley-foods-chicken-fillets-750g

Tesco -with added water

https://www.tesco.com/groceries/en-GB/products/295710866

There isn't a huge market for it (outside takeaways and ready meals) and you can easily spot it because the meat almost "snaps" rather than tears.

Also, don't think the quality of meat from the local Butchers is necessarily better. The only real guarantee of quality is price because if an animal is bred humanly, outside over a long period that costs money.

Don't kid yourself you're supporting chicken welfare at £5/kg, you're buying it because its cheap nothing else. Free range on a Sussex Downs farmer it ain't

Lowering food standards, you might get it for £4 come January, though who knows what its origin is

Well, at least this exchange is on topic. And you're wrong. I use the same butcher as Westdene Seagull . The meat is cheap but excellent quality and high welfare. It's why the shops in Hangleton and Essex are so popular.

Must be a hard read for JCFG to see me agreeing with a Brexiteer and correcting you

Wow, sounds like you have been to the US, based on the comments from the Bonapartists on here I thought I was the only one!

That’s a relief.......I have been more than once and didn’t get shot, killed by a copper or food poisoning once. CFLM.

Wowwowwow. That really IS impressive. You've been to America more than once. What's the least favourite place you've been to? Hard to beat is Odessa, Texas. It's like Peacehaven without the sea. Lubbock up the road has its high spots though, esp if you go on a Saturday. That'll be the Day.

I'm going to try to avoid responding to all your Trumpian outbursts in future. No one can be as daft or unpleasant as they make you sound so you are clearly on a wind-up. Satire of a kind I suppose. You've hooked Pasta though and with him, close behind as always, the jeering genius.

It’s why they’re so angry. They know they’ve been had. Look at the ridiculous, irrelevant, personal abuse they rounded on me over something utterly unrelated. That’s frustration and unrefined anger. Anger they themselves don’t really understand.
One doesn’t attack someone with such spite without underlying issues. Bullies are usually victims elsewhere in their lives. It’s why I treat them with calm and understanding rather than becoming bitchy back.
The rage of victims. I actually feel sorry for them in some ways. To be lied to and betrayed by the party they were loyal to, is disgusting. So loyal that they were able to be manipulated into voting to leave the organisation that actually protected their rights and their standard of living. Actually manipulated them into handing over their rights. Quite remarkable really.

You’re a pathological liar who spews bullshit like a bovine being fed laxitive.

You’ve told so many porkys over the years you forget what you actually said!

As I said you’re a one man freak show and I actually feel sorry for you.

Wickies geese are £25 - £35 at Christmas time. The exact same thing in Canhams on Church Road is circa £70.

They simply buy in bulk and sell in deals. They're terrific chaps as well, Brighton fans and look after the local old people.

It's a shame to see so many people getting a local issue wrong because of their politics. Looks like Westdene was right about this thread as well.

Sounds a great shop. Can you tell me if they do chickens for less than, say £3.50? Westdene seems to have disappeared, having implied they do.

Calm down. You’re getting yourself very wound up over something someone has said on the Internet.

Do you have an opinion on US food standards and the recent legislation regarding its importation? Or are you here solely to try and throw arrows at me?

Walmart on a sunday about an hour after the churches get out is a sight.
heaving with christians who have just been washed of their sins being patronising and abusive to staff en masse as they celebrate a renewed lease of "im a better person that you.....bud"

High welfare, where is evidence? These chickens would have never seen the light of day. The shops are popular because they're cheap

Free range is high welfare, Lidl charge around £10/kg and that's cheap

He's disappeared after leaving you a link to their website

The answer is "it depends what else you buy". The best deals are on "hampers" at the weekends and they can work out very well per piece, but you'll come back with enough to stuff your freezer and keep you going for a month.

To which I would add that we buy most meat in independent butchers too. Either that or people like Garlic Wood. My objection was to Westdene's suggestion that the only reason for people buying meat in eg Lidl was because they were stupid. If your independent butcher can sell a chicken for a bit over three quid then my point doesn't stand. Otherwise, it does.

all this fuss about quality of chicken... its still chicken. has no one thought about the nice, large hormone infused steaks?

The evidence is in a red apron behind the counter, serving me.

As I've now said three times the cheaper deals are one step off a cash and carry. You do understand how those work, right?

So a butcher puts on red apron, and its all good?

I'm sure they run a good business and buying cheap chicken is what 90% of the market is. People buy on price, and this butcher selling at £4-5 is about as cheap as you can buy in the retail space

There's nothing wrong with this, its fast growing and efficient and it won't hurt you, but please don't pretend its high welfare.

You get what you pay for in animal products

Yeah, yeah cause when you get a fried chicken, or a chicken curry or chicken kebab or chicken burger etc. you know UNEQUIVOCALLY exactly where the meat comes from?

And let’s see if what is sold in supermarkets is not labelled, I would imagine for the billions concerned about where there chicken comes from the wholesalers will be sticking a ring of stars or Union Jack on the label to get your custom. Capitalism will find a way for you kids.

For the rest of us......cheep cheep chickers! I so much feel like chicken tonight....I could almost sing it!

Anybody that's eats a readymade meal containing chicken, if you believe that it comes from a free range farm your dreaming. Most comes from chicken farms. I've worked in these they smell horrid and most chickens are gone after 18 months to slaughter due to reduced egg production. You can always pick them up for your own coops.

ll.

Really? The exact same bird? Same farm and everything or what? I know Canhams love a mark up but that seems extraordinary to me that a local butcher is selling fresh turkeys for 35 quid.

(More interested than anything else here)

Yep, and those are the standards we've just agreed to give up
