I think the whole development squad is an issue - some of the players are 20/21, if they are not good enough to progress to the first team when will they be ?

Well we know that Dobbie has that ability you talk of, proven,.... but he still gets sidelined.
Very true.

It would hardly be a fair competition if Dobbie and Toby (sweet) came on the market, together.

Do you really think he has had enough game time to make his mark?.... give him two starts and then make a judgement. What I have seen so far leads me to believe he has what it takes, as many say he maybe needs a half season loan in L1, then bring him back, give him a three year contract and watch him fly.... but of course thats just my opinion.
Would you play him instead of Barnes?

If only there was some kind of link between our last quality yoof set up, say 10 years ago, and Southampton's set up now.

That's exactly the point though isn't it. Do we really believe we can produce top quality players at The University of Sussex?! Deffinitely not. Give us a few years at Lancing and bosh, we'll be churning them out like nobodies business but at this stage we just aren't there, and there is no shame in that at all so far as I am concerned.

Er - I think you are missing his point completely.

His point is Dean Wilkins.

Ok, well clearly Wilkins did very well with the youth team and we have littered the football league with a few of our academy products. We've done well in relative terms.

And I did completely miss his point to be fair!

Although, actually, his point is a little tenuous, because Wilkins doesn't work in Saints' youth set up anyway.

Added to that, most of the players they've bought through (Lallana, Bale, Walcott, AOC) pre-date his time there, anyway.

Their academy appears to still be in good shape though - James Ward-Prowse and Luke Shaw both seem to be good players.

Hmmm, not really.

We've gone from a side littered with academy players, to JFC.
I don't image, for one minute, Wilkins has no involvement with their Youth set up.
Sure their last crop of big academy stars pre date Wilkins, but I bet the next set will be developed long before our's makes some appearances/money.
