Top 3 Pubs in Shoreham

My Shoreham pub of choice was always the Kings Head - which was closed to allow the Ropetackle development to go ahead or (to put it another way) to allow Watneys to make a fortune selling the site.

As far as I recall, it was the last pub anywhere to sell Tamplins Sussex Bitter from a barrel sitting on the counter behind the bar.

When it shut, the landlord moved to the Snowdrop in Lewes and revived the fortunes of that place, opening the way for the Snowdrop eventually to become one of the most off the wall drinking establishments in the world.

On thing I agree with Lord Bracknell about. The old landlord Ron Lynn died recently and the KH virtually came to an end when he left circa 1979.

One funny scene was when CAMRA came in to spread the word of the new revolution on real beers. Ron, the landlord, got it completely arse about face cause he never got around to installing the keg beers in the first place and when Watneys brought in the keg equipment, he just stashed it around the back. He thought CAMRA wanted to see the equipment for some reason. And it got out some ancient long black pressured canisters.

Not that anybody was drinking beer cause it was a cider pub. They sold more cider than all the beers put together, out of a wooden cask until 1974. It was a neat trick for everybody, cause Watney's based their rent on the amount of beer sales.

History now.

Having only ever been in 3 pubs in Shoreham, my top three is easy

Duke of Welly - Used to go there a fair bit when a mate of mine lived in Shoreham
Lazy Toad - Sells Oranjeboom (or at least it did when I went to Tricky Dickys birthday bash a few years back) lol
The Bridge - Convenient pit stop on bike rides

I was in the Kings Head the night it closed! My brother's still got the toilet chain!

I used to live in Lancing but as teenagers in the early 1970s we used to go to the Shoreham Youth Workshop. We'd drink in any pub that would let 15 year olds in so that limited it to the Crown and Anchor, The Crab (tree), the Burrell Arms, the Ferry, the Hebe, the Morning Star and the Lady Jane.

We used to avoid the Bridge because that was the skin'ead pub.

The bridge - way too expensive and a shithole pub that got rid of the pool tabel for NO reason! They worry more about Food than beer although the garden is nice on a sunny day.

The Bucks - Piss Fosters at £2 a pop cant go wrong, also loads of decent ales, very friendly people and my main regular.

The Duke - Not what it used to be but they do have live bands and various beer fests so its always worth a pop in.

Waterside - 2x Pool tables, young audience, alright for footy, usually alot of totty

Swiss - Too expensive, another Food pub but again the garden is nice, usually avoid

Crown & Wanker - Another to lose 3 pool tables for NO reason, dont like the place but usually have 1 in there on a pub crawl

Sovreign - Open late..always a winner with that, other than that its SHIT...avoid!

Marlipins - Abit pants IMO

Lazy Toad - WINNER...purely for having ORANJEBOOM on tap and Toad Porn on the walls!

I grew up in Portslade in the 60's and had my first drink at 15 in the Shoreham pubs. I went in most of them but the Bridge was the favourite at the time.

As someone who had only known these pubs in recent years my choice is:

The Wellington: best by a country mile. Great beer, good music. A proper pub.
The Red Lion: difficult to cycle past on the Downs Link. Sells a good pint of Harveys.
The Lazy Toad: should be higher up the list. I've not been in since the smoking ban - but smokey is my immediate thoughts on the place.

Howver none of these would get me out of the Norfolk Arms in Steyning if they were across the road. Now that is a pub.

Norfolk Arms used to sell cider. Coates. We used to travel up from the King's Head cause there were not many cider pubs around, the Mitre in Brighton was one.

Does it still sell cider? Last time it didn't.
