BBC Sport - Tony Gubba dies at the age of 69 following a short illness

Very sad, that's no age - absolutely my favourite commentator from the golden pre-Sky era of TV coverage: never as nerdy as Motson and - thank god - never as conceited as Barry Davies, he always had bags of enthusiasm and enjoyed the goals as much as any real fan would.

Maybe one day, when Sky's puerile graphics dominate and every football match is covered mainly for the purpose of lambasting referees or close-ups of thuggish tackles, we'll wish back for more of his approach.

He was always the 'third choice' behind Motson and Davies and, more often than not, commentated on our games if we were ever on MoTD. Seemed like a lovely man. RIP Tony.

About 28 years ago I was a photographer on a holiday camp on the Isle of Wight.

One evening when I was at the bar I heard an instantly recognisable voice behind and turned round to find Tony Gubba.

He was staying the week with his family and I got to know him fairly well through chatting to him about our joint love of sport, with him buying me more beer than I did for him.

He was a thoroughly decent chap with two cracking daughters as I seem to recall.

So God bless you Tony, RIP.

One of the best commentators that the BBC has ever had and his enthusiasm for football always shone through with his distinctive voice.

RIP Tony.
