Tonight's game from MCFC's perspective

Hello All
I'm a City fan and having been having a good read of your forum prior to tonight's game. First of all, congratulations on a decent, intelligent and sometimes funny forum. It is very interesting to read the impression Albion fans have of City.

To be honest, until this season, we would have approached tonight's game with trepidation. We lose away games to lower league opposition practically every season, often twice. And when the draw was first announced this looked like exactly the kind of game we would lose.

But now...there is a wave of optimism amongst City fans. Not just because of the money we have come into but because of the performances Mark Hughes has got from the players we have.

Tonight is seen as a good test for us - are we still prone to "Cityitis" - winning spectacularly then losing even more spectacularly - or are we now a team who is above that.

Good luck tonight, I hope it is a good game. Obviously I hope we win but I wish you every success in your campaign to get back up the divisions again. I remember when Brighton were a force and I remember you stuffing us in the cup not too long ago. A game which cost john Bond his job, incidentally.

Know what you mean. We approach games against Conference teams with trepidation.

If you're still in Didsbury, it means you're not on your way down here, which is just as well. You're about as close as the Withdean away end is.

Although it's our home/liferaft, we've come to despise Withdean, and every game where we don't play well tightens the screw into our loathing of the place that bit more. Work is due to start on the new stadium site in about 10 weeks or so. Oh, the sheer luxury of looking forward to a roof...

Manchester City fans were there in numbers on Fans United Day (funnily enough United fans were strangely absent), and there is a sizeable Sussex branch of the MCFC Supporters' Club.

I would wish you good luck for tonight, but I don't think you'll need it. So I'll just send general good wishes.


Oh yeah, I remember the FA Cup game. I've still got a scar across my nose from that game. Nothing to do with violence - more to do with stupidity.

My Auntie is from Stockport and her whole family support City. For years I have heard them talk optimistic nonsense (David James being the best keeper in the world is a prime example) but it looks like they have a reason to be excited.

Mark Hughes aims to take City’s sensational form from Sunday’s win over Portsmouth to the south coast in tonight’s Carling Cup clash with Brighton.
The Blues begin what they hope will be a long run in the competition later than the most of the Premier League due to last month’s UEFA Cup commitments against FC Midtjylland, and the tie comes in the wake of the 6-0 mauling of Portsmouth at the weekend.

But the Manager will not be taking anything for granted, and he says that the Seagulls, managed by Micky Adams, will face a strong City side.

Hughes said, “We’re tapping in to the goodwill from the weekend, it was a fantastic performance and everybody has come in to work with a smile on their face. It’s made my job a lot easier.

A) I've told my City supporting mate to take his binoculars for the away end - to start with he thought I was joking but he's now got them packed.

B) I'm getting hammered before the game to ease the pain

C) It is going to be a sight and sound to behold when a 'packed' Withers will be stunned into silence when we are 3 down after 15 minutes (not that I'm being negative)

D) I hope their new owner does pay us a visit and takes sympathy on our plight and offers Dick a few million in spare change

Sold out bar a few single seats here and there.

Pitch is excellent. 'Stadium' is shite and a half.

The problem is that we play reasonably well away from home (3 wins, one draw from four games on the road this season), so not everyone gets to see us do that. At home, we're abominable. There are many reasons for this, some might even be contradictory.

My main theory is that it's a chicken and egg thing. The crowd expect the team to lift them, and vice versa, and when it doesn't happen in reality, you get a never-ending circle of the crowd (very quickly) getting on the team's back, which dents their confidence, which makes them play worse, which means the crowd moans more, which means that etc...

And no roof means you can't get a good head of atmosphere going.

That's not negative at all, I'm guessing you are banking on Richards being much improved tonight. If he defends like he did in the 1st half vs Scunny, then SWP will have raped him so badly that we'll be more than 3 down after 15 mins.
