And so speaks a man who knows. Good stuff NMH.

I'm planning a trip to Stockholm later this year but hear it's very expensive. Is this a rule across the board or are there bargains to be had if I want to go out for a reasonably priced simple meal (probably with lots of Herring!) with a sub £10 beer or two?

Sounds like a fantastic city

It's brilliant here.
I particularly like the surroundings of the city too - fresh lakes to take a dip in with little grottos where you can picnic by the amazing scenery. I was picking wild blueberries and tiny wild strawberries the other day on a stroll through a forest with pathways going every way. Yes there are clean malls with modern shops, but the architecture in general is classic in the centre, with mixtures of ancient heraldry and golden ornamentations, copper roofs over dramatic stone palaces ...that are just office buildings. The waterfronts are easy to find everywhere, because it's all islands joined by bridges. Still the underground is clean and neat, simple and quick to use.

Bars ABOUND with people on weekdays as well as weekends, outside seating is nice for early evening meals or a beer in the long evenings of summer. Stuff is happening in concerts and showgrounds and theatres all over the place - so you need to know what and where you need to be to catch stuff that's on. The old town 'Gamla Stan' is cool, with a couple of Brit bars but loads of kellars in side alleys, dark dungeons with winding stone stairs down to traditional bench seated tables.

Beer is normally around £6 to £7 each, but watch out it's mostly chemical shite lager. I try to down the occasional ESB bitter as it is at least decent for the 72 krone they ask! I can't drink much more than 2 beers a night anyway because I'm just not that interested in drinking much - which is just as well.
There are lots of waterside bars that are great.

You 'can' eat for around £8 a meal, look for the lunch specials or buffet meals - otherwise you might pay £17 or £20 for a fairly good quality meal anywhere in the city. In cafes just a wrap or sandwich is usually about £6 or £8.

Get an SL card for however long you are here, because it gives you full roaming, inc tram, buses, trains, underground.... and the Djurgardens ferry as well. If you can take a boat out for a trip around then I'd recommend it, Stholm is cool to see by water too.
