Amazing how the harder he works the luckier he gets!

That said, he has the charisma of a rich tea biscuit.

Not having that! He has undeniably been fortunate with every draw he has ever been involved in as a manager, going by the FIFA rankings. This is not a positive reflection on his talent at all. Just luck.
Overall he is a bang average manager, and if we win tomorrow it will be as much despite of him as because of him.

In the games themselves but you don't make your own luck with the unbelievable knockout draws he gets every tournament.

Historically we don't play any of the top teams until we lose to them.
I suppose, but we got the easier side of the draw by finishing the group first.

It's not we do that's been the major luck.

Previous England managers have won their groups too and had to play the top teams in the last 16 or quarters, the draw just opens up for Southgate to play a top team in the semi or final.

By the way I'm not knocking it, long may it continue.

This thread has gone like all manager threads that get started. They're either the best in the world or the shittest in the world. Neither of which is true.

Whatever his good and bad points, he gets the England team to finals and semi-finals, so he's doing something right, whatever your opinion of him.
End of thread

You underestimate the skill involved in getting a lucky draw.

If Denmark had scored against Serbia in the last few minutes, England would have faced Germany, then Spain, then France to get to the final. You think Southgate left that to chance? Don't be naive. It's hours and hours of training that stopped Denmark winning that game.

You mugs thought he should be coaching England. Gareth took the smart option and coached Serbia instead. He's currently wearing a curly wig and coaching Spain.

I wonder if the OP will have as much gusto if England get spanked by Spain, the first real test of the competition.
Tactically Southgate will be outdone his only hope is to drag Spain down to his level and make them play like they are at Stoke on a cold wet Tuesday night.
Rough up Lamal early doors and play Toney to wind up Rodri.

Of course he will. He's nature's balance to those who permanently criticise Brighton.

It depends which way you look at it. another is whenever England have come up against a stronger nation they have lost (a point slightly softened by the Dutch result admittedly). So he must be doing something wrong.

To your first point - most views I’ve seen say Southgate is mediocre . Neither the best nor the worst. His record of beating lesser nations is pretty much impeccable. Over a long period that’s a big achievement.

But the secret of his success over other England managers is undoubtably his luck of the draws, which defies belief. id take it every time though. Better than losing to Portugal!

How anyone can defend the football served up by Southgate is beyond me, we still haven't won anything and failure on Sunday will still mean we haven't won anything but we got to a final so the Gareth fan boys will be happy.
I'm no Gareth fan boy but with international tournament football there's much more to it than just style of play. It's getting the players to buy in to the process. It's getting the players, who largely play for rival clubs, to bond as a team. Its about man management - especially of those players who haven't had many minutes. Its about instilling belief and resilience. It's all the other stuff behind the scenes that you don't see on the pitch, although there is evidence of it, such as winning penalty shoot outs; players coming on in the dying minutes and contributing with assists and goals; not giving up in the face of adversity, coming from behind to win. So many England managers have failed at some or all of those aspects, which Southgate has been very successful at. You have to give him a huge dollop of respect for that imo

Depends on which posts you’ve dwelt on. My take is many people including myself have said he has created a brilliant environment for players, he gets the camp details right, and has done the basics exceptionally well. I don’t think there’s anything wrong in saying he comes up short tactically and being proactive in a match situation - I think that’s been obvious.

In qualifying and group games it’s not so critical, but to win something the actions of the manager can be the crucial difference.

Strong and fair points. His best work may go unseen to the fans.

Still in Brighton
Like the bloke, a bit scared of his lips, frustrated by the apparent strategies and formations but respect the results. Disregarding the lucky draws and who you face, as that's out of his control and pointless whataboutery. I'm actually really enjoying the knockout ride since the overhead kick because I found the timing and kick in the teeth against Slovakia hilarious and a typical football-can-be-so-cruel/glorious moment that makes me love the game. Win or lose tomorrow, Gareth's England has given me more positive moments (who doesn't enjoy a SF or Final, regardless how you get there?) than any previous England manager in my lifetime. No more whining from me.

Oh please will you all stop with 'lucky' tag.

A team does not reach 2 consecutive Euro finals because they are lucky
A team does not win 3 consecutive matches from losing positions because of luck

Why are teams normally in losing positions for three consecutive games?

What's the plans for haters (if we win) and have the open top bus parade?

I assume you'll boo Southgate and throw objects at him whilst holding the trophy aloft?
