I would query the "nice place to sit down" bit. It's the sticking to the Carpet that gets me.

But at least he is not as big a hypocrite as some other Brexiteers:
James Dyson, who campaigns for Brexit then moves everything to Singapore,
or Jim Ratcliffe, the multi-billionaire chairman of INEOS and his plans to build a replacement for the no-longer produced Land Rover Defender. He was going to build them in Bridgend, South Wales, where they have recently closed a Ford Engine Plant. He has reneged on that idea, thereby wasting lots of Government/Local Authority money which has been spent on it, and has now bought a defunct BMW plant(?) in France (again ?) ....... because - you guessed it - of the export advantages of being within the EU.

Edit - its Hambach, near the French/German border. - https://www.theguardian.com/busines...british-heir-to-land-rover-defender-in-france

Seem to me to be prime examples of Do as I say, not as I do. This household will never buy a Dyson product again....... partly because we think they are overrated anyway, but mostly because of his hypocrisy.[/QUOTE]

Good for you, not liking hypocrisy, but you are consistent, aren't you? Given the hypocrisy of champagne socialists, can I assume that you will never be voting Labour.

I don't drink in Wetherspoons, partly because Martin is an unsufferable arse but mostly because his pubs are full of pissheads, scumbags and cheapskates.

Prob why we often visit one for the initial meet up at away games.
Its a magnet for fellow pisshead, scumbag, cheapskate Albion comrades.

I used to like the West Quay at the marina, but I haven't been in for over six years now, because of the way he treats his staff.

Mrs V suggested having a Sunday roast there a few years back, it was absolute carnage, too few overworked staff to cope, used glasses piled up at one end of the bar and about 12 people in a melee huffing and puffing while trying to order food. We gave up and walked out,

You called :lolol::laugh:

Witherspoons tactic is more about killing the opposition than offering you value. they don't give a **** about you, its all about sales and profit, and a nice property portfolio

my local is privately owned and run and offers special beardy 'stupidly named' craft mega juices . . . at half the price you suggest, putting it squarely in the bargain basement bracket.

The big difference is the owner is not out to make a massive profit for himself and certainly not a load of tub thumping greedy shareholders.

Those the same shareholders who are currently pumping 350m quid into Mitchells & Butler to keep it solvent?

Went in the spoons down George St Hove with my wife to meet friends ( there idea ) brought a round and sat in a booth the 4 of us. Within 30mins some cretin threw a pint at someone else missed them completely and covered me. I was somewhat upset im 6ft 5 and a big unit due to working out. This little scrote was standing there looking to apologise, I stood up looked at him now being held back by the manager and barmen as I wanted to flatten him, he scarpered out the door.
The manager gave me some money to clean my clothes which was nice, obviously knew who it was. Had to rush home to change my shirt as had a later table booked in a restaurant.
Never been back since

Noted.

What an evil man that Tim is eh? Pricing beer n food like they should be priced, while all the while providing public toilets for all and a nice place to sit down and have a nice cup of tea for those on coach parties. What's not to like?

Price of his beer is cheaper than most pubs can buy it for, is that fair? The food is cheap because it's cheap nasty shit.

Wetherspoons next door to a local pub is no different to having Lidl next door to a local private store.

That's right except that only those over 80, soon to be over 70 will be allowed in, open everything back up again and the virus will come back again, do you want that?
I have tried my very best and I hate it too, but people like you and so many others really make my piss boil.

Sorry I meant once everyone is vaccinated, not right this minute while the vaccine is still being rolled out.

But that is the plan! Its just how do we do it safely without throwing away the success in getting case nos deaths etc down. I never supported Boris he has made hurrendous mistakes but his cautious approach to opening up is exactly right. We need to measure the impact of each stage of opening up before we do the next thing. Noone wants to get locked done in the autumn again bdcause the case rates are left too high.

Yes I agree Boris has done as good a job as could have been done in balancing the science with the economic needs.
I meant to open things up once the vaccines are in everyone.

You know how many people in the UK have lost their lives to this, right?

Well, 25% of those total covid deaths came in January.

Now is absolutely not the time to throw caution to the wind, because you’re bored of it.

Yes I am aware of the amount of deaths.
Yes I agree now is not the time to throw caution to the wind,I never said it was.
I want to see we normality return not because I am bored but because I am concerned for the amount of job losses and small businesses that will be destroyed of the government don't do as planned and reopen everything once people have been vaccinated.

It's the comparison between costs. Your independent can't compete on price whether you believe the cost should be cheaper or not. Wetherspoons can buy a keg of Carling for £55 Pub next door it could be as much as £160. Tin of beans in Lidl 30p tin of beans in Independent £1

I mentioned the food as it's cheap in Wetherspoons for a very good reason it is not top quality

I’m with you on this.

There has to come a point where the Government has to make decision and take responsibility for it. Because scientists have no concept of anything other than the impact of the virus itself.

Are we trying to eradicate the virus or just manage it? The flu still kills people every year and we have vaccines for that.

There will never be a shortage of scientists the press can wheel out “warning” that if pubs open cases will rise. But to me this ignores the wider issues of mental health and the economic impact. I worry that we have become so micro in the analysis of this that we have lost sight of the big picture.

I would never be so rude (well, I might be, but not to someone who's only shortcoming is drinking in 'spoons)

I don't eat meat, haven't for 30+ years, but if I did I'd draw the line at minced up eyelids and aresholes served up in a roll made mostly of preservatives.

I can think of several ********s I'd like to see minced up ???

I'll take issue with you on Boris's 'Remainer' credentials.

I believe that what drives Boris is personal freedom, and when he really sat down and thought hard about the Brexit issue he realised that ONLY Brexit was compatible with his true guiding instinct of unfettered freedom. Remaining needs teaming up, relying on your teammates, pooling sovereignty for the greater good.

Most of his personal decisions on Covid have been wrong because he has let his instinctive love of freedom override the need for restraint.

In Cummings he found a kindred spirit, which is why he felt he couldn't sack the man for doing something Boris would have done in his shoes. Boris is also cut from the same cloth as his father , who f*cked off to Greece during lockdown.

Absolute rubbish. What drives him is an overwhelming ambition to be King of the World - to emulate Churchill (fat chance). He chose Brexit because he saw it as the way to reach that. And what is wrong with POOLING SOVEREIGNTY FOR THE GREATER GOOD! Most sensible people might see the for the greater good bit is laudable.

You are right about his personal decisions on COVID. But for his “instinctive love of Freedom” read totally irresponsible overly libertarian obsession with freedom”, which led probably to the deaths of lots of people.

In Cummings he found somebody equally selfish who was power mad enough to do the hard work while he himself sat back twiddling his thumbs.

Cut from the same cloth as his father, who worked for the European Commission (or something similar), was an MEP and a remainder...... which somewhat argues against the idea that Brexit is the only sensible choice for somebody who loves freedom.

The flu might kill lots of people a year, but it’s wrong to equate it to COVID-19. My elderly sister in law (78) was very blasé about the whole thing, refusing initially to shield and self isolate because “there is nothing wrong with me”, (she has since found out she has a potentially serious blood disorder).

Her retired consultant surgeon brother changed her mind when he told her and emphasised to her that it is a horrible way to die. It’s far more than just flu.

No, you can not assume that at all. I see it as a totally spurious, odious and simplistic comparison.

Apart from anything else, Socialism and Labour are not necessarily the same thing. I was branded as a Socialist a number of years ago by a local Conservative Councillor (who was not the brightest button in the box) who saw it as the ultimate evil..... a view with which I do not agree. It seems to me the equivalent of saying that any Conservative voter is a Fascist, which is clearly ridiculous.

But I have never considered myself a Socialist, more a Social Democrat. In the next election, as in most elections where I live, my vote will be tactical - anti-Conservative - because anything would be better than the present crowd of bumbling incompetents. A Labour government would be much better for the people, for the red wall constituencies - than anything Johnson might try to do to “level up”.

Maybe he will prove me wrong, but I doubt it.

I agree re Wetherspoons.

Lidl’s is cheaper and the majority is quality.

Very hard to accurately identify where someone caught COVID.

Someone who wet to a pub last summer, might have gone on a train to get there or to a kebab house after, or gone home to see their Mrs who has been at the supermarket

How do you say exactly where you got it?

Tim Martin can't know that for sure

Of course he doesn't know it but, mind you, there isn't too much that he does know.
That said, we will be subjected to a litany of comments that "there's no evidence that there's transmission of CV19 in pubs"

I went to the local 'spoons' once. Just once. I was about 50 and my mate about 66. We were threatened by three different and unconnected cretins in the space of the 20 minutes it took us to be served and drink up. In one episode a bloke dropped something as he was leaving. I picked it up and called him back to give it to him and he spent the next five minutes accusing me of stealing from him, while his moll (thankfully) pleaded my innocence.

Oh, and the chain owner is a weapons grade cock.

Faversham Harry? Last time i was down some local hood in his best trackie started verbals at me as i stood outside Furlongs in front of his young lady .My mood after a day on the pop and relegation at Dover was not good . His face as 15 mates piled out and asked what the problem was ,was a picture .
