because if people had been following the rules, would have lower infection rates and restrictions wouldnt have been necessary. or, the virus is more infectious that supposed and we need more restrictions. but we pretty much know how infectious it is, so have to conclude spread is due to people not following the basic rules.

Or the government took too long to impose rules in the first place? Then made the rules so changeable, contradictory and confusing that it was almost impossible for them to ever bed in Properly and work? Schools open during a lockdown? Eat out to help out? how would that ever stop transmission? Supported by utterly appalling logistics infrastructure and a completely ineffective test and trace system. I’m no supporter of lock down at all but if you have to do it do it quick, keep a consistent message, and wipe the virus out fast. Almost every decision is based on PR optics.

Don’t fall into the trap of letting the government believe this is the fault of the people. The governments management has been an absolute disgrace at almost every point through this entire period.

But where I live (Adur) presumably has been following the rules as our rate is well below the threshold where more restrictions are necessary, yet we’ve got those restrictions anyway. So my point stands, what is the incentive to comply if we are going to get the restrictions whatever we do?

But presumably other parts of West Sussex are higher? They've done it by Council area (Brighton & Hove are a unitary authority so have their own Tier). I live in a part of Kent which is low but we've but put in Tier 3 because Swale & Thanet are the 2nd & 3rd highest in the country.

I know that the Brighton and Hove area has seen a decrease in numbers of late but.....
the case of infections doubled from October 2nd from 1108 to 2289 on 28th October
then up again to yesterday to 3941 (BBC coronavirus page) Admittedly these figures do
include the fact that there are two major university campuses which have distorted the cases.

The area i live has seen increases from 541 (2nd Oct) to 745 (28th Oct) to yesterday 1161.

Considering we have all supposedly been on lockdown for the past three weeks, these increases
are exponential and only marginally decreasing.

Crawley has a case rate of just 85 per 100,000, it’s only marginally higher than Adur!

Yup, looked that figure up yesterday. Brighton rate was practically identical. These are low numbers by any stretch of imagination, or at least as low as anywhere's going to get anytime soon. What gives?

I’m with you on that. Once all this is over and the public inquiry takes place, there are several figures at the top of this government that should be looking at jail terms.

While I'm not a huge supporter of the Tory Government I would argue that jail terms should be given to the idiots that continue to flout the rules/restrictions rather the ones that are putting them in place for the good of the population.

Exactly - if you zoom into the detail further you can see how wide the range is across small areas, eg. Steyning has a rate higher above the average than Liverpool according to this data. So it seems they have taken the option of averaging out across the wider county to judge the tiers.

Same goes for Haywards Heath, Hailsham etc.

Plenty of community, just no leadership. One can only expect a nation to listen to people getting it wrong for so long.
However, I'm failing to see why people are getting so wound up about tier 2. Pubs and restaurants are open, barbers open, gyms open, shops open. It's hardly that restrictive.

I agree. At my daughter's school there are clear signs saying "Please wear a face mask". Lots of parents turning up with no masks, not keeping their distance when picking up their kids.

Indeed. Some posters only care about themselves. Looks like low crowds at the Amex for the foreseeable as too many don’t like following rules if set by a Government with which they disagree. I miss living in Asia where there was a sense of community over individual. England is depressingly the opposite.
