[Brighton] Thousands queuing for trains at Brighton station

Having asked the commuters' group (laden with timetable nerds), this is what they said...

"I looked on real time trains for last Saturday night which records all trains, there were two extra trains between 10pm - 0004 to London, and one to Three bridges and one to Gatwick. After 0004 there were two further trains. I make that 6 extra trains in that time window (i.e. after 10pm Saturday). Of course the missing 9 extra trains could have been earlier in the day or something."

That’s precisely what did happen, the extra trains ran earlier in the day.

They were all there and they all ran, you can check real train times.

You seem very sure of yourself.

This is what the train company told the BBC on Monday:

GTR spokeswoman Angie Doll said: "We had standby trains. We had an additional 15 trains available."

She said: "When we do events like this, we advertise the trains that are in the public timetable but we also have additional trains."

She said the rail company did not use its additional trains on Saturday.

That statement is strange because there were over 20 extra and 15 ran. Did miss that quote. But at least 15 service extras ran throughout the day

Did they cancel trains elsewhere to free up stock/drivers? It's odd that GTR can't fulfil their weekday timetables but can drum up extra services on a Saturday. Call me an old cynic :)

On a weekday GTR will run a more intense service than on a weekend, for example Brighton to Cambridge trains do not run on Saturday it’s most likely that’s where the extra stock came from and the drivers were probably offered over time

Despite GTR spokeswoman Angie Doll saying they didn't? Well one or other of you has MISPOKE in a fairly major way ???

And I for one will ALWAYS trust the posts of the NSC sharp end rail professionals past and present over any kind of attempt at corporate spin by GTR. Because the NSC rail professionals have no reason whatsoever to lie and invariably give us more insight into how the railways actually run than we'd get from any other source.

I unless she doesn’t know about the extra trains or whether she is speaking about Thameslink or Southern specifically. That statement is garbage as no one knows what they are talking about

Despite the incoherence of your post that doesn't actually make any sense, Angie Doll was the spokeswoman for GTR, and her words SHOULD make sense - even if they are as incoherent as your own.

I'd be happy to believe that, but given the context of what was being spoken about (i.e. the carnage at the station after the Preston Park gig), her statement is, at best, ambiguous or, more cynically, misleading.

The other issue is that, a statement saying 15 trains were made available doesn't necessarily follow that 15 trains could have run. They could have promised 25 trains, but if the drivers aren't there, the statement is meaningless.

What's more worrying is why some trains were allowed to leave 'half-empty', knowing there was a big queue at Brighton Station. It's not as though the network was full of outgoing, London-bound trains at that time. Perhaps an industry specialist can enlighten us on that score.
