There is an article in today's press about how Germany is making it easier for foreigners to register and work. It's stark difference to the UK. It makes you wonder doesn't it? I thought being pro-EU and pro-immigration was bad for the economy? But when compared to a bunch of paranoid little Englanders, what do I, one of the worlds best economies, the CBI and the British Manufacturers Association know eh?

DO you think there is any downside to opening our borders to everyone in the EU?

Literally looking out of my window right now in a country where the borders are literally nonexistent due to the mainland Europe Schengen Agreement, as the sun rises in a cold but clear blue sky across as prosperous nation........as much as I try I can't see the downside. I need to pop out and spend a euro on a coffee shortly; trust me I shall keep looking.

Maybe the Germans have got it wrong? Maybe the correct approach is to shut every border and isolate yourself but still think the US cares for you and will help you?

That article was penned almost a year ago. Merkel's record polling in the recent election, not to mention the SPD coming a strong 2nd, demonstrates the view that the majority of the nation is happy with the current approach. If a nation was unhappy with the current EU situation it wouldn't re-elect it's strongest supporter with even higher numbers. Whilst the UK still grapples with its identity and position the rest of Europe decided ages ago...and is moving forward. This latter point was demonstrated by the absolute disinterest with Cameron's recent showing at the EU when he spoke about re-opening the treaty; the scenes were quite embarrassing. Almost as embarrassing as his treaty survey which he handed out and only got 2 replies from. Yes 2.

I spend a lot of time in Bielefeld, those locals, even in the relative 'leafyness' of their local environs, express huge concerns about the influx and its effect on their culture. Same applies to people I know on Detmold too.

I got the impression that their voting trends were based on the personality cult of Merkel...they seem to liken her strength to the strength demonstrated by Thatcher....they like strength in the face of adversity and challenge.

PS: 9 months is not a year.....and the point was that there are big problems, something you couldn't see it appears.

there is an irony in those from the political right being against the EU
free labour market.
Under the political leadership of Reagan and Thatcher a new economic
paradigm dominated the devolved world.
The Chicago school neo classical economics tore up the post ww2 contract
Free trade and labour zones are part of the idolatry of the "free " market
The company "free" of the state.
Careful what you wish for this idolatry has undermined conservatism
with a small c.
Of course reagonomics has been a failure for the majority.
As we struggle to emerge from the longest recession ever recorded.
mass unemployment and underemployment( involuntary part time work)
endemic in Europe.
Falling social mobility ,stagnant wages, housing costs and energy inflation.
But the rich had a great 3 decades.
It is the left and those who believe the economy should be a tool of the people
as opposed to those who believe people should be a tool of the economy
that should oppose EU and other structures serving the needs of globalised capital

Will they adopt the same approach when Turkey joins the EU ???

They don't though. The right loathe the truly free market nature of the EU while the left can't decide whether to protest xenophobia or protectionism. Both sides are literally opposite where they should be ideologically.

Trouble with the former is that ends up with a small % of the population driving the economy and producing the benefits that will be 'gobbled' up by those who sit idly by with their hand out......the latter however encourages the majority to get out there and contribute.....the key challenge is always to fairly distribute wealth to those who genuinely deserve it in proportion to their contribution, not simply because there is a system that convinces them they have an entitlement.

Well googled and cut & paste by the way.

Very clearly put.

I do sometimes wonder whether it is no accident that the free market frequently gives rise to situations such as large immigrant populations entering the UK or the welfare state allowing anomalies that the Daily Mail enjoys exposing. For all right-wingers' flag-waving, perhaps it is convenient to have these panics and pangs of outrage to deflect attention from how the economy is being run and the enormous wealth inequality in this country.

Not cosseted Das Reich. Just taking a world view. Enjoy life behind your curtains.

A world view eh, good job you're so well qualified to judge, living in a place with such rapidly changing demographics as Brighton , its you , and people like you who live behind the 'I'm alright jack' curtains, I pray that brighton ends up having an influx of Romanians or other immigrants that have an effect on how you live , you can pontificate all you like with your 'world view', but until the area that YOU were born and brought up in and where you still live experiences this phenomenon , your view is pretty worthless, or its certainly viewed as such by people that live at the sharp end.
