I dont like the mail or the guardian ....but i believe this .....because its true.
http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/news/d...tion-and-the-eu-bbc-bias-at-its-most-blatant/ " the BBC editorial line seemed to ignore entirely the central, thudding issue at stake: the UK is one of only five EU states (the others being Finland, Germany, Estonia and Ireland) that offer non contributory benefits to the unemployed. In other words, only if you live in one of those countries are you able to claim unemployment benefits without having paid into the system."

Ha! That's a blog by a Tory MP. I presume you've read the whole of the report he mentions to back up your assertion that it's true?

Let's assume for a moment you're correct though. All that benefit tourism and STILL making an overall positive net contribution in the last 12 years? Must be working really hard. Or in professional middle class jobs. Or both?

Still, since the senior editorial team at the Beeb includes Spectator writer John Simpson and Melanie Phillips' husband I imagine heads will be rolling over this any minute now.

I am not the one who thinks that my opinion is worthless because of where I live. I know that I still have strong links to the UK and Sussex and that I am interested in what goes on there. You are the one that considers my opinion worthless because of Geography but yet spends so much energy and time responding to my posts. I just find it a it odd is all.

Don't get me wrong I love hearing about the immigration problems of Sompting, it fascinates me that Sompting has changed so much in 10 years.

Well it is strange that you and your mate Dave are the most vociferous against my posts, in fact probably two of the most vociferous against any criticism against the way this country is going.
I find that strange, but after 10 years away, i suppose you know best.
Sompting has probably not changed much in 10 years, but as do not work in Sompting, and in the last 10 years have worked in many places, then perhaps, although you may not agree, my finger is more on the pulse than someone living thousands of miles away.
Anyway, my opinion, you have yours eh.

Like you say, the debate about how best immigrants can be settled and what can be put in place to improve integration and lessen negative impact on communities usually ends up being a binfest about whether borders should be closed and whether a country is 'full' or not.

An opinion from a bloke living in a country about 30 times the size of England and with a population of about a tenth.....jeez.

Also I note you've added to your original post with what you believe to be the relevant point. That bit is certainly true. But you and he think that's the central issue. I think the central issue is how many tourists use the system because of it.

I thought you said I was allowed an opinion?

Now you are, once again, discrediting mine based on geography.

Make up your mind SM

Is Sompting full?

Australia is full you know

So is the US

Immigrants typically add to the country and use very few services which give them a positive effect. For every dodgy one there are thousands that are willing to take on basic jobs and fill specialist roles that need filling.

I thought we had agreed that it was okay for me to take an interest in the UK? It is very confusing talking to you sometimes.

Be honest haven't read through this post but I guess it has exercised different opinions

Not really, it has been widely ignored by many as it disproves their little englander theories.

I suspect it was written by people who don't live there and don't know what is going on.

Haven't read all the posts so I might be castigated and I'm no racist but I hope glorious locations such as Sompting and South Ferring retain their original 'character'.
The Asian barbeque on the beach last summer caused quite a stir amongst the locals, plus quite a few empty lager bottles left on the beach afterwards. It put the sea bass right off my lugworms the following day. However, I'm sure an empty Harveys polypin left on the beach would aid a healthy catch.
They never learn, do they.

Well off the top of my head immigrants will use services like language translation services which UK born citizens wouldn't need.

http://www.hsj.co.uk/news/finance/translation-services-costing-nhs-60000-a-day/5041106.article

http://www.lawgazette.co.uk/70154.article

With foreign nationals making up 14% of the prison population, thousands going through the courts and a baby boom driven by immigrants I don't think the facts on the ground reconcile with simplistic trite platitudes about the positives.
