Thoughts on the Burgess Hill game

According to the Argus Murray picked up a groin injury which may explain what sounds like a lacklustre performance.

Well I'm glad I didn't pay more than a fiver for that entertainment.

We did not play well although the pitch was poor and BH competed well.

Things that stood out were:

El Abd isn't a natural full back and didn't look to exploit the space in front of him - one of his major contributions was trying to take out Tommy Fraser in the warm up (accidently of course)

Hawkins looked ok althogh not the quickest

Virgo - nice to see him back and has more vision than most CB's

Loft is not a left back but did make one or two promising attacking forays - would like to see him play wide right in a pre season game.

Hart. good to see him play.

Thomson is a good player - good technical ability and always working hard offensively and defensively. Also good Captain material.

Fraser, Robinson, Murray & Gatting were quiet to say the least

Highlight of the night was Kane Louis - I really think he could be one for the future. Soon after he came on he made a terrific run down the left and shows good technical ability, good awareness and if he can grow a bit could have real potentail.

What worries me is that Kuipers and Sullivan both have "slight" injuries, and who was the replacement, the 40+ year old goalkeeping coach.

Just shows we need to sign a keeper to keep Kuipers on his toes, Sullivan has bulked out loads over the summer, but if he can cut it at League 1 level is yet to be found out.

For me the only player to come out with real credibility was Thomson. I thought he played the middle of the park really well, got forward for once, and took his goal really well.

Hawkins and Virgo won everything at the back, but they were playing against tiny strikers.

For me, although I love the bloke for what he has done at the Albion, seeing Hart play was like watching Hatton vs Mayweather. You know he is good, but he just isnt good enough, and it was painful to see things not going quite how he wanted. I would love it if he proved me and everyone wrong, and made himself worthy of another contract, but I think he should go out on a high.

It was great to see the rest of the squad there supporting the players playing too

That is the Hart situation in a nutshell, and the reason, sentiment aside, we'd be mad to give him another contract.

Don't be fooled by a goal and an assist against Burgess Hill.

Dont get me wrong, I thought he "did a job" he scored a tap in and made a nice pass for Thomsons goal, but there were times when his touch let him down, and times when you thought he would ghost past his marker and it didnt quite come off.

I know the pitch wasnt in great nick, but for the hero he has been down the years, I honestly dont want to see him struggle at league one level, and people to get on his back and for him to undo his LEGEND status.

I love all the commitment he has given, and the passion he shows when he plays, but I cant help feel that that is not quite enough - it will be sad to see him go if he does, but then again it would be good to see him in the stripes again - difficult decision for all concerned

I cant believe people seriously dont see that Virgo is our best centre half

Its not even close. He is a certain starter

Indeed... any two from four would look pretty good to me, but Virgo and Elphick would be my first choice.

Agreed, he's 25 but even at that age shows bags of experience.

I know this was only a friendly and it is Murray's way of playing, but I'd like to see another striker bought in to put a bit of pressure on him during the season, I think it would bring better performences out of Murray and might up his work-rate a little. Of course, it could work the other way and lead Murray to think he is bigger than the club if he is dropped for a lesser ability player and make him want out. A bit of competition is generally good though.

Standing in the way of control
Things I saw with my eyes last night:

Virgo and Murray had a little tiff in the warm up.

Everybody played quite well, even Doug Loft, although maybe it was the cheap beer.

Micky may be having some sort of mid-life crisis. He wears trainers and has hair like a 20-year-old down Oceanas. He did, however, laugh when I asked him if Mayo wasn't there because he'd signed a three-year contract with Chesterfield. And then got a bit angry. I love winding Micky up.

And Danny Rolf is still extremely sexy.

agreed, game was gash from what I saw, nothing more then a training exercise, I can't beleive some losers bother rating players in a friendly.

I wasn't rating players (which i normally would do after a league or cup game), just passing on my opinions so that people who couldn't get to the game would have some idea of how we played.

When I can't get to a game (pre-season or otherwise) I appreciate other people's views.

If you don't want to read the thread then don't bother.

But he is not our best centre back. His positional play is still suspect and the only way he should play at centre back is if it is in a three man pairing, so there are those to cover his positional issues.

Agree if we play a 2 it has to be Elphick and Lynch and if a 3 Virgo can play on the right with Lynch left and Elphick Centre which would take some beating

I think if it is 2 central defenders it will be Virgo and Elphick (if still here) if it is 3 add Hawkins the one to miss out there is Lynch. Possibly left back?
