I remember in our close me and my mates would ride around for hours and hours, me and a few on our Grifters, the others on Choppers and BMX's, banging and crashing up and down the kerbs and ramps, popping wheelies, giving "backies", pulling skids etc. Then one kiddy who had been waiting for a bike for ages finally got one for his birthday, except his parents went and bought him a Racer.

Piss-thin wheels and spindly frame, all he could do was ride sensibly round on the paths while we were all being dangerous and stupid. Poor kid.

the word "SKILL" meant- American Bum disease

God, I remember that one going round my modest Hurstierpoint primary school. Before this point, "skill" was the preferred description of anything remotely good.

Other things I remember: having to do PE in your vest and pants if you forgot your kit (never happened to me fortunately, but nowadays parents would sue the school for mental trauma and unreasonable distress).

Taking your PE kit to school in a highly attractive drawstring bag made by your mother out of old material.

Plastic lunchboxes with Thundercats or Sindy on the front and a matching thermos flask inside.

Being laughed at during playtime by the kids from the nearest comprehensive as all their teachers were on strike while we had to go to school.

Not being allowed out to play during break because it was raining.

Plastic airflow footballs in the playground. We weren't allowed proper ones because they were too hard and resulted in the weedy kids getting targeted, nor could we have sponge balls because although safe, people preferred to soak them in muddy puddles and hurl them at the clean uniform of the token class boffin or pikey.

:clap2:

Football in our school yard was always with a bald tennis ball, and the teams were always England v Scotland, with arguments before kickoff every time cos nobody wanted to be in Scotland.

And we always pissed ourselves laughing whenever anyone whacked the ball and it wedged in those wire criss-cross fences.

Ah, BMX's, reminds me of the first film I saw Nicole Kidman in, for a mate's birthday party - BMX Bandits.

Also reminds me of a great game we used to play which was just known as "cutting up". Basically, you have a small patch of grass with defined edges and everyone rides around on that patch. Two rules: 1) If you ride out of the area you're out. 2) If you put your foot down you're out. You can imagine the violence and carnage....!!!!

Then of course, back in those days, Monster Munch really WAS the biggest snack money could buy.

Playing 3 and In (score three and you go in goal)

Another sign of the times: most of the kids supported Liverpool, in the same way they follow Man United or Arsenal now.

I was the lone Albion fan :( my resulting loathing of Liverpool has stayed with me to this day. Glory seeking little bastards :D

Yep, I had an identical experience in my school, too!

I remember my mate was one of the first to get a VCR, and I went round there to watch Star Wars (I'd already seen it loads of times at the cinema, mind). To us, the coolest, most unbelievable thing about the VCR was that you could actually pause and freeze-frame the action !!

We spent ages looking at the bit when Obi-Wan slices that aliens arm off in the bar. The camera pans along the arm on the floor, and we'd pause it and study the fuzzy picture of the gorey, bloody bit where the arm had been cut.

Marvellous scene.

Who here was in love with Wonderwoman.

If a shop didn't have what you wanted in stock you were given directions to somewhere that might have it.

Fireworks displays were held on November 5th.

Rediffusion boxes.

That whirring noise made by the circlular dial on telephones returning to the start point.

Your Dad would film or photograph you playing with other children without getting funny looks from other grown-ups.

Er... I didn't fancy Wonderwoman.

I did like Morten Harket from A-Ha though:love:

I couldnt fancy wonderwoman coz she shared my surname - bit too close to home!

As for the ice slide - the big freeze in London back in January (I think).... made a slide and spent ages hooning up and down it.... till i fell over. A week later, spine still aching, I made it back to work.....)

Running everywhere (never walking) - home from school, down to the sweetshop - everywhere.

Having one jumper, one skirt, one pair of trousers, one pair of shoes, maybe a couple of T-shirts - and that's it!

Bay City Rollers socks in flourescent colours from British Home Stores - and white ones with Donny, Marie and little Jimmy's faces down the side!

Reading Enid Blyton books until your eyes hurt.

That game where you go for miles leaving chalk arrows - and sometimes instructions, like "Count to 100" - for your mates to follow.

Fresh vegetables only with roast dinner on Sundays - weekdays were baked beans or maybe frozen peas with your Crispy Pancakes, Rissoles or Faggots. Vesta packet meals - Chop Suey or Chow Mein with Crispy Noodles!

our school was always rotherham versus rest of the world. all the best players were picked 4 rotherham as p.e teacher supported them. rotherham 12 rest of the world 1 again. worst thing was being in doncaster nobody liked rotherham apart from him! but if you didnt play 4 rotherham then you wouldnt get into the school team. everything above seems to bring back great memories. i didnt really realise how old i was until i read about most people at uni being 3 when stone roses brought out their fist album. christ!! i went to watch them twice.

They have never heard of "We are the World, We are the children" and the "Uptown Girl" they know is by Westlife not Billy Joel.
. They have never heard of Rick Astley, Bananarama, Nena or Belinda Carlisle.
· CD's have existed since they were born.
. To them John Travolta has always been round in shape and they can't imagine how this fat guy could be a god of dance.
· They can't believe a black and white television ever existed and don't even know how to switch on a TV without a remote control (that isn't attached to the TV with a long cable!!) How they would cope with dial tuning for the TV and radio, we will never know.
· And they will never understand how we could leave the house without a mobile phone (well, we did all try the tin cans connected with string idea... )

Quite a good intressting post but theres some points about us youngsters i disagree with, i was born in 1983. and i know the we are the world song, it was american's version of band aid and also billie joel originally done uptown girl, like a lot of the songs in the charts now are covered. i vagiley remeber rick astley "the one hit wonder" also the first single i brought was on casstte tape not cd and also remeber the tele in the kitchen use to be black and white when i was younger as it was a spare one. i do remeber as a kid doing the string and tin cans aswell!!

good points though :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

The daft thing is that half of Rotherham support Wednesday.

Somebody mentioned getting paid £2 per hour. My first job was £5 10sh a week.

Mine bought a Philips VCR 2000. That format died a death before betamax (probably the day after he bought it)
Friend: "wow you've got a video recorder!"
Me: "Yes, but we can't play anything in it"

:(

How's about this.

We always used to go and visit my Mum's family on a Saturday. We'd drop my Dad off at the Goldstone, then it'd be off to my Nan's. It didn't seem odd that she had an outside toilet and a tin bath. Then we'd cross the road for tea at my Aunt's, with loads of my other Aunts and cousins turning up, and would watch Doctor Who, The Dukes of Hazzard, The Price Is Right.....
