My BSc and MSc courses aren't actually about construction, but H&S.

From 35 plus years experience I can agree about Architects...

Nobody likes somebody who arrives to tell them they're doing something wrong. No matter how eye-gougingly obvious it is that they're doing it wrong.

Struggle to see the issue here.

But a good opportunity to say I hate architects - with few exemptions they are snotty *****. Whenever I meet someone studying architecture in the university in Lund, I feel I want to throw them out the window from one of their beloved modernist high-rise buildings or bury them under a layer of steel and glass just like they take every opportunity to do with everything that is a bit too nice, human and picturesque .

We are not all arrogant twunts!

Yes, my 'Proper' Job is mostly Compliance which isn't popular. However no Compliance means Piper Alpha ( I used to work on the North Sea BTW)

Maybe. But Construction sites seem very male, very straight and very white, which isn’t representative of society. Why is this? What barriers are in place which are stopping non-whites and females getting into this industry? You say you struggle to recruit, it’s no wonder when you’re missing out on a huge swath of society.

I guess my focus is in the design and consultancy world, a real mix there. Building sites, i.e. where the real work is done, has always been full of different backgrounds. Rare to find a high proportion of English speakers over recent years - it does seem predominately white though. Not sure whether its straight or not, haven't enquired....

One client I work for took on a BMS engineer that decided he was a she and went through the transition - the client team took it all very seriously, went through awareness training etc and were fully behind the integration of this person. Pretty impressive and spent time and money to do the best they could to embrace the idea and the individual. It was all a bit strange though; looked like a man, talked like a man, walked like a man, dressed like a man - but had tits. He didn't stay long despite all the efforts of the client.
