Lots of women work in my field of expertise, in fact the latest President of our Professional Body is a Woman and almost certainly better at her job than me.

I don't know quite how this thread got diverted to this subject, I just wanted to point out the ludicrous psychobabble that infests University discourse.

I have a Zoom Meeting in 30 minutes that will no doubt take over an hour, I would wager that we don't talk about students for more than 10 minutes.

Well if you didn't want the BHA branch of the Woke-Alliance jumping on your back you should have used a less triggering example. Complaining about anything around gender, race, religion or sexuality is the mistake. Surely there must be a discussion on something like "Aroma Therapy in Architecture" you could have shared instead?

Edit: My sincere apologies to all those suffering from aroma therapy related issues, it was not intention to belittle or offend... etc., etc.

I'm out on a Construction Site shortly to do some Silica Dust and Noise Monitoring (my proper job when not doing University Shit).

I can say with some confidence that the Workforce won't be discussing Gender, Devience and Society issues when we are having a Tea Break.

Sorry if this offends some of the more sensitive bods on here...

Perhaps that ìs the problem.

Sorry what’s your issue with this? Can you also explain your frustration given the context of your FE role?

It’s hard to identify if this is an attempt at humour or a misogynist dinosaur.

It's hard to understand full stop. It's very badly written and incomprehensible as far as I'm concerned. I've worked in the construction industry for 30 years and there are more pressing issues to overcome - there's more than enough deviancy as it is

I would be stunned if there were more people in the audience than the speakers...

Now that may be the case but attendance figures don't have to be printed in the portfolio that accompanies, what Im sure is, a monthly 'begging X for money' meeting.

Would I be right in thinking that you also won't be discussing exposure to Asbestos, Silica Dust, Noise and Hand Arm Vibration on that lovely Tea Break either?

You seem angry that women are daring to want to work in your field of expertise, or is it just that you are uncomfortable with people bothering to think about how to make such a thing an enjoyable experience for everyone?

It does mean that those happy hours you have spent discussing boobs and so on with the lads over the last few decades will no longer be possible, but ask yourself this: are you mourning the loss of a man only environment or mourning the loss of your youth instead?

Who knows, maybe if you have women there during your tea break they might actually want to talk about exposure to Asbestos, Silica Dust, Noise and Hand Arm Vibration? Or knitting, they always want to talk about knitting.

Pretty much everyone I work with in the construction industry is seeking decent people, qualified experienced people with integrity. The industry is full of bullshit and hence we are all clambering to get decent people - it doesn't matter what race, sexuality or gender they are - its whether the are good at their job or not. I've been involved in many interviews and have not once seen or sensed any judgement based on gender, sexuality or race.

A little bit more focus on core skills and less on the bullshit in the OP's post would be a better focus for our universities.

I'm lecturing, by the way, to put back 35 years of knowledge of my profession to my Students.

I'm sorry if this doesnt include the claptrap that jobsworths at Universities trade in but it might make my Students working lives a bit easier.

Have you done the one about the Long Weight yet? Or getting a new spirit level bubble?

Unfortunately, it is one of the many, many events that my University indulges in and wastes their resources. I would estimate 90% of my University emails are concerned with this sort of bullshit.

Isn't it funny how all this is bullshit to those not affected by it. On a slightly different note, I had to attend many "bullshit" presentations, meetings and things over my working life about such bulshit as homophobia, racism etc. I heard plenty of people saying how much more of this PC bullshit do we have to put up with, a fair few of whom would then later make some truly horrible homophobic comments which at times made even me feel uncomfortable (Im a six foot six, built like a brick outhouse gay man), thus proving the need for them.

So whilst to some Caucasian, heterosexual, males these seminars on sexism, homophobia, gender issues and various other isms may not seem relevant or important, to those of us that dont fall into that particular category it actually IS important. And it isnt important that we go to them, its important that the aforementioned Caucasian, heterosexual males go to them to find out WHY there are still problems, and that even casual references can have lasting impacts .

A lot of us (myself included) actually have subconscious bias and genuinely don't realise that what we say or do can sometimes have a major impact on someone else.

Perhaps if you think it is all bullshit, you should go along and have your somewhat blinkered eyes opened

Maybe. But Construction sites seem very male, very straight and very white, which isn’t representative of society. Why is this? What barriers are in place which are stopping non-whites and females getting into this industry? You say you struggle to recruit, it’s no wonder when you’re missing out on a huge swath of society.

And here I am trying to lecture my students on issues in the construction field such as exposure to Asbestos, Silica Dust, Noise and Hand Arm Vibration.

I knew I couldn't cut it in FE...

Reclaim Holloway is hosting four panel discussions throughout June at the London Festival of Architecture. Dr Rachel Seoighe from the University of Kent, an associate member of the Gender, Deviance and Society research group at Greenwich, will moderating the conversations and with some incredible speakers across architecture, women's services and rights, criminology and the women in construction movement.

You've missed out wolf whistling

If you're actually part of the meeting, why don't you do something about it then ?

Its a university. "Psychobabble" is what they do. What they've always done.

Bollocks. You'll be sitting around moaning about these subject, like some obsolete old societal cuckolds.

Bloody Worthing!
Having worked in both FE and HE, there are two quite different, if overlapping, cultures at work here. At the risk of stereotyping, FE is very hands-on, vocational and can-do whereas HE (in a university context) is discursive, critical and reflective. It could be that the OP is uncomfortably straddling (as it were) these two cultures.
For what it's worth, when I moved from FE to HE I did find myself reflecting that the unis (esp the research-intensive ones) can be a bit up themselves. But there and again, I was more 'town than gown'.
