Wadebridge, Cornwall
i love my country, i love the history and i love the tradition

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,--
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.

Absolutely, patriotically, THIS

Yes it does, the History of this great country is without equal.
We, as a nation, can look at our past and hold our heads high that although tarnished in many aspects of how the British Empire was built we have learnt from the mistakes of the past and done more to rectify these mistakes than any.
We stand for all that is good in the world,, in living memory we have sent the flower of youth of the country to stand against tyrany and opression on our doorsteps and beyond, many of whom paid for the ideals we hold with the ultimate sacrifice a man can give.
How any person cannot be proud of Great Britain is such an alien concept to me I cannot put it into words.

Rule Britannia, God Save The Queen, we are truly a Land of Hope and Glory.

Yet we stand side by side with a nation who seem intend on making the same mistakes. We have sent the flower of our youth to fight in another countries illegal war for power in the oil rich middle east.

There are many many things to be proud of in rich history of Great Britain. But there are many things to be ashamed of too.

I cannot see how you believe that we have learned the lessons of the past. To me we are making them again and we are still not treating people with the respect they deserve. Or at least we are supporting a country which are doing these things.

I understand those who say that a lot of the roles of the the nation state have been usurped by supra-national or pan-national organisations - a bit like the way that club football with premiership fans from all over the world has replaced international football to a certain extent. I also understand the reasoning behind those who say "Why be 'proud' of something that is just an accident of birth?" In some ways it IS a bit stupid, a bit like saying you're 'proud to be gay'. However the concept of a nation state does give you a sense of identity; as someone mentioned earlier we're tribal animals and we do at some level crave a sense of belonging. I'm proud to be a Brighton fan for example and proud of everything we've achieved - even though in real terms I did very little towards it. That's irrelevant though as being a Brighton fan gives me a sense of belonging to the Seagull Nation and a sense of community. Consequently I have no problems with people saying they're proud to be British, fair play to you. (And yes, for the record I AM glad I'm British, well, English anyway).

Good comment, all I would add to that is that, just because you love your county it doesn't automatically mean that you also have an irrational loathing for other peoples.

It is true that it doesn't. But you could certainly read between the lines of many posts on this thread and infer that many people think that Great Britain has a more glorious history than any other country in earth.

Reminds me of the Arsene Wenger quote: "Everyone thinks they have the prettiest wife at home."

Or to carry on the football analogy that fans of every club think they're the best fans in the world.

Whereas in fact all football clubs have a whole range of different types of fans. from great through good to horrible. Much the same as every country and it's history. I think this is a great analogy.
