'history' as a nationalist concept is irrelevant, none of you were born when these 'historic' events happened so why should we take credit for them? If you feel pride in this country's history, are you saying others (i.e. Germany) should feel shame for theirs?

I think you will find that a lot of them do.

This royal throne of kings, this sceptred isle,
This earth of majesty, this seat of Mars,
This other Eden, demi-paradise,
This fortress built by Nature for herself
Against infection and the hand of war,
This happy breed of men, this little world,
This precious stone set in the silver sea,
Which serves it in the office of a wall
Or as a moat defensive to a house,
Against the envy of less happier lands,--
This blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England.
That's actually really good, you have a talent there.

The balance is how to be able to draw from your country's history without being trapped by it. Traditions aren't merely inherited but are things we can create.

Absolutely this. You ignore history at your peril. This is why modern politicians are ******* useless.

I have spent my entire life studying history, I make my living from it so you would hardly be surprised to find that I consider it an essential. As others here have noted, we ought to learn from the past or we make the same mistakes over and over. Mixed feelings here because although I wish people would learn, I make more if mistakes are made.
I think we are fortunate in having a tremendous history. We have made such an impact on the entire world most of which I would consider positive. It is a mistake not to pass it on as our culture dies without it. We can lose identity, what it is to be British so I have enjoyed this touch of patriotism this weekend. It is what brings us together whatever your background. Fly the flag have pride in this sceptre isle.

This was in an advert in the Metro last week. You can tell who the advert for by the last 'reason'.

Here we go. These are the 60 Reasons Why Britain Is So Brilliant.
1. Marmite. Mmm…yuck.
2. Our devotion to our wonderfully gripping soap operas.
3. Vivienne Westwood’s heels. It’s worth the pain.
4. The Earl of Sandwich’s groundbreaking concept of putting a savoury filling between two pieces of bread.
5. Glastonbury – mud and all.
6. Our modesty – we never boast how great we are, apart from today.
7. The pound and our reluctance to adopt the Euro.
8. The best selling music artists in the world, are our very own; The Beatles.
9. Our politeness – no matter how irritated we get, we are always too British to say anything.
10. Kate Middleton and her sister.
11. The Great British Summer (don’t forget the brolly).
12. Driving on the left (the right way to do it).
13. No matter where you are in Britain, you’re never far from a pub.
14. Any excuse for a cup of tea.
15. Curry, the unofficial national dish, with a pint of cold lager.
16. We don’t moan because we are miserable, we moan because it makes us happy.
17. Our international language. Travelling abroad is a doodle.
18. The Queen and her graceful wave.
19. The Great British countryside, when you’re not stuck behind a tractor.
20. Freedom of speech.
21. Deep fried food, Fish, sausages, Mars bars… absolutely anything.
22. Some of the very best museums and galleries on the planet. Free.
23. The national tendency to cheer the underdog and ridicule the mighty.
24. We apologise way too much. Sorry about that.
25. Crisps. We eat more of them, in more varieties, than the whole of Europe put together.
26. Shakespeare. When thou can understandeth it.
27. Sir David Attenborough and his soothing voice on a lazy Sunday afternoon.
28. British strawberries, perfect with cream.
29. Our cobbled streets, watch your heels ladies.
30. Chips with fish, or cheese, or beans, or pies, or steaks, or curries or in a sandwich. Chips with pretty much everything.
31. We know the importance of a good queue.
32. Beans on toast, brilliant no matter what your age.
33. Court room wigs. Our great way of making very smart people look very silly.
34. Pantomimes. The jokes never seem to get old.
35. No matter how cold it gets, it will never keep us from our nights out.
36. HP sauce. Chuck it on everything.
37. The 3pm Saturday kick off.
38. Cream teas. In case you are wondering, Cornish is jam first, Devon is cream first.
39. Jellied eels. And jelly. Though not necessarily together.
40. Beer gardens. Because we love our beer and we love our gardens.
41. Saying ‘I’m fine’ no matter how we feel.
42. A love of mowing the lawn.
43. Plugs with switches. Amazingly nowhere else seems to do this.
44. Tolerating nearly everything, but banning hosepipes.
45. Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch in North Wales. Just wait till your sat nav tries that one.
46. World Cup, 1966. We’ll be clinging to it forever.
47. Egg and soldiers. Those brave and tasty souls.
48. The BBC. The only time you’re not constantly reaching for the fast-forward button.
49. Our British seasides. Watch out for the seagulls.
50. Archie Gemmill’s goal against Holland.
51. Prime Minister’s Question Time. A no-holds-barred, public bashing for whoever’s in charge. Every week.
52. The Full English breakfast. Served all day.
53. The weather. Although we get less of it than almost anywhere, it’s still the major talking point.
54. The 99 flake.
55. Morris dancing. We know how to move it 15th Century style.
56. Allotments. Our very own little patch of the countryside.
57. Our love of anything pickled.
58. Carry On films. Oooer Missus.
59. Our talent. Be it our artists, musicians, directors, actors or just dancing dogs.
And finally…
60. Carlsberg.

I love our history. Ok some of it makes you cringe, but on the whole we've done plenty of good things in the past as a nation to be proud of. Have we learnt from history as a nation, possibly not ie Afghanstan springs to mind.

There is a big difference between history and patriotism. Im not a patriot in the sense of loving the royal family, standing to attention at the sight of the flag and singing the national anthem and certainly dont think that everything English is best BUT I think our history is very relevant and very important.

Very true. I am very interested in history. Does history make me more patriotic? Not really I find a lot of it makes me less patriotic. I find the idea that we should accept, excuse, condone or even celebrate horrific acts because they were done by the country we happen to have been born in quite absurd.

I think that nationalism is becoming outdated as our borders become blurred and we become parts of different communities which transcend the traditional borders (NSC being a good example). I prefer to think of my self as a Planetist, someone part of a global community.

We have a big history i.e. there's a lot of it. Good and bad but it shouldn't be just a list of dates of the kings and queens, battles and such. It should also be about the people of England/Britain because it was the people who suffered and changed the way things are. We learn about the bad things under colonial rule but not so much about the suffering of our own people. British children worked in mines and factories until well into Victorian times, people were deported to Australia for stealing a loaf of bread etc. But the people also fought for rights and often paid the ultimate price e.g. the Peterloo massacre 1819. You just have to make your own conclusions but make sure you take it all into consideration and not just what others wish to you to hear.

I think that nationalism is becoming outdated

i am glad that you are in the minority and that you and people like you have not got a chance in hell of running the show.i would say grow up but you have obviously tried that and it didnt work.We are a world of nations,we have a pack mentality ingrained in our DNA,the trick is to grow and become more enlightened, educated and to get on better with each other,to say peoples love of their nation is becoming outdated is quite frankly absurd and rather idiotic/childish,the last few days in this country alone would have informed you that the vast majority of the population are quite happy to be nationalistic and wave the flag.

I don't really disagree with what you say (apart from the childish insults). I think that in becoming more enlightened and getting on better we will find that national borders and place of birth will become less important to us as we build new communities across the world. As immigration increases across the world we become more at home with those of other nationals I think that the lines drawn on a map will become less important.

As for the nationalistic flag waving over the weekend, I think that has more to do with people wanting to have a damn good knees up without really thinking about it too much. For this reason I too am glad I am in a minority.

As for the show me and people like me have no chance of running, well I am not really sure want you are ranting about so I can't comment.

There are plenty of signs that the nation state has had its day. Look at the massive organisations that control economies all over the world. BP and HSBC, to name but two. Neither of these organisations are located in a particular nation. They operate everywhere - and no "national" institution attempts to control them.

And look at the ambitions of the Scottish National Party for their "nation". Essentially, what they want to do is pull the plug on the concept of the nation state as the basis of power - Scotland in Great Britain in Europe. That's the way to go. If it happens, I think I'll claim my Scottish passport.

I understand those who say that a lot of the roles of the the nation state have been usurped by supra-national or pan-national organisations - a bit like the way that club football with premiership fans from all over the world has replaced international football to a certain extent. I also understand the reasoning behind those who say "Why be 'proud' of something that is just an accident of birth?" In some ways it IS a bit stupid, a bit like saying you're 'proud to be gay'. However the concept of a nation state does give you a sense of identity; as someone mentioned earlier we're tribal animals and we do at some level crave a sense of belonging. I'm proud to be a Brighton fan for example and proud of everything we've achieved - even though in real terms I did very little towards it. That's irrelevant though as being a Brighton fan gives me a sense of belonging to the Seagull Nation and a sense of community. Consequently I have no problems with people saying they're proud to be British, fair play to you. (And yes, for the record I AM glad I'm British, well, English anyway).
