Listen i'm very happy being in the Premier League, but it was Barber or Ashworth or one of the other suits who said we would be aiming for top a 10 place this year, so this is what is in the back of most fans heads at the moment, they set the expectation level and come the end of the season they need to deliver.

Long term. Could be 10 years. Why does everyone want everything immediately these days.

Because, at some of our ages (ahem) and lifestyles (*cough*) we could be dead tomorrow.

Ashworth said it on camera, BT game last season, Arsenal home?

This interview? About 50 seconds in he mentions becoming "a top 10 Premier League club". Says NOTHING about doing it this season...

You must know to be top ten you need a top ten budget, we currently have a bottom two budget. Obviously Covid has had an impact but has it really had such a detriment it wiped roughly £50m off the summer transfer budget

I’d settle for this/next year’s (January) aim being a new keeper and a new LB. Now come on that can’t be construed as being entitled surely?

That should keep us out of the bottom three if the recruitment team play a blinder, that’ll do for me, and yes I know I lack short term ambition.

Honest question, where does the figure of £50m come from? ST sales (refunds) don’t amount to that do they? Sky keeps paying, advertisers keep paying, TV rights haven’t stopped, no matches have been cancelled.

When I play darts I generally aim for treble 20. Mostly I miss. Whats wrong with having a target to aim for?

It's not the club's expectation of continual, unbroken, success (I've read the interviews from Barber and Bloom that accompanied that aim), it's some fan's.

The problem is whether it was "this season" or not (it wasn't), it's become a millstone round the necks of the board to be thrown back at them when things go wrong. Much like a few years ago with their "One Ambition" mission strategy which became lambasted as "League One Ambition" while Hyppia presided over a car crash on the pitch.

I took it on average spend of 50-60m every summer since being in the PL apart from last summer obviously. So I’m guessing that figure must be within budget and manageable.

and action was taken and Hypia removed and 3 years later we were in the PL...

It was (albeit with incredible reluctance), however the expectation setting left the board open to ridicule when things went south on the pitch. I'd have hoped they'd have learned a lesson from that, evidently not.

But its not a millstone, it really isn't. Its a context on which to base big decisions. It makes life easier in an organisation. The top 10 is a lofty ambition/vision. The whole club needs to sign up for it : Our best hope of getting there and staying there, is to run the club in way that means we produce players more cheaply than simply buying, produce players that can be sold for huge profit, create an environment that allows these ultimately brave decisions to be made. GP is key to that right now - his development of players, willingness to provide the pathway etc. are far more important : make the strategy a reality. CH was key to the "one Ambition" piece : he wasn't the guy to deliver the next development. That's the key : its no point TB et al wanting to be sustainable top 10 if other parts of the Club, like the 1st team coach, are simply shouting for more money for players.
I genuinely think that within the strategy there is a risk assessment on the impact of a relegation on that strategy. It may be "terminal" in which case GP is under a lot of pressure, but I honestly doubt it is. Its no good talking long-term if you can't absorb short-term difficulties.
The Top 10 thing will be helping everyone in the Club right now, especially during the difficult moments.
