Fighting now in Lewes. Young Shingle reporting two motorists fighting after accusations of queue jumping at Tesco Petrol Station, Lewes. Tesco Stewards/Staff trying to intervene.

FFS, what is the matter with some people

We’re they dressed in black and towing a caravan?

The amount of people trying to blame the bbc both on here and in the wider community is depressing. Do you morons have no critical thinking skills at all?

I have a different opinion to you. Dismissing me as being a moron says more about your critical thinking skills and your belief in your own infallibility. I am though intrigued by your assumption that your critical thinking skills exceed mine.

Texaco Aberystwyth half a mile away from Morrisons, all pumps working (8) no queue 3 people Inc myself filling up at 136.5p , headed off to get shopping and you literally can't get in the car park for cars queuing for fuel at 135p, traffic in and out at a complete standstill with Heddlu scratching their heads as to what to do.

Just incredible that people are willing to waste a Sunday queuing for 1p per litre cheaper fuel whilst burning fuel.

Mental .

Did you actually need fuel, though?

Amazing. Completely shows up Brexit for the real shitshow that it is! All the racist anti foreigner brigade will be fuming. None of them understand anything.

Seriously, who would take up this ridiculous offer? Help us out, then be booted out for Christmas?
If they really wanted the drivers, then offer a decent incentive, rather than a kick in the face.
Still, makes it easy to blame the foreigners/EU for being awkward, when they refuse this 'kind' offer.

The job offer is not being made to the EU. It will either attract temporary workers or it won’t. Either way we need longer term solutions to address the structural problems faced in recruiting lorry drivers. Bearing in mind the problems also being faced in EU countries I also have my doubts as to the likely success of this scheme. Whether in or out of the EU we would be competing for the same workers to make up the shortfall so the best response is to raise wages rather than import cheap labour.

Of course, the drivers will enjoy better T&Cs than here, but what goes through the mind of someone who thinks that a visa which will expire on Christmas Eve is some kind of incentive?
It's absurd.

Thursday afternoon there were no queues for fuel, in spite of some issues in the supply chain that had resulted in a handful of forecourt closures. Thursday evening the media started reporting that there was a problem with fuel deliveries and immediately hundreds of thousands of people adjusted their behaviour accordingly.

Political parties and commercial organisations invest huge amounts of time and resource on media relations precisely because they know the media has the power and ability to lead the national conversation and influence outcomes. If you truly believe media coverage doesn’t shape events then I believe it is your critical thinking that is flawed.

Of course, the real morons are those purchasing fuel they don’t need but it would have been obvious to the media that this would happen yet still they ran a non-story with the inevitable fallout.

I suspect he does think media coverage shapes events but only when it suits his own views. Daily Mail whipping up a panic about immigrants….blame the media. BBC whipping up a panic about supposed fuel shortage…. Blame err Brexit. All parts of the media play to their constituency and BBC News has rather been guilty over this issue which is disappointing to those of us who are generally supportive but not impressed by the events of the past few days.

I wonder if the drivers in the petrol queues are the same people who complain that cycle lanes cause congestion?

The media did report there was a problem with deliveries, but they also emphasised there was no shortage of fuel, it was only affecting a small number of stations and there was no need to panic buy.

The result was people panicking and rushing to buy fuel all over the country.

The job offer includes 3 months temporary visas. British drivers don’t need visas, although I have heard bus companies are losing drivers because haulage pays better.

Tell people not to panic and they will suspect they should be doing so. Run the story as a minor one and you won’t need to tell them. This story was given over prominence for one reason only and that was because it added to the ongoing one about the lorry driver shortage. The fact that there was no actual issue with petrol deliveries was conveniently ignored.

The BBC reported the facts of a driver shortage causing delivery problems but no fuel shortage.

The Sun had this as their front page

I don’t think we have seen anything yet with the press starting to hype up lack of supplies at Christmas people will be clearing the shelves of toys and chocolates etc before Autumn.

True. The Guardian, even today, just can't stop themselves - "UK could face Christmas turkey shortage, says specialist supplier".

Edit: and you can bet your bottom dollar there will be stories after Xmas about all the uneaten turkeys being dumped.
