The obscene amounts of money EU membership costs the UK taxpayer.

This is debatable.

Anyway. I'm of the opinion the UK should leave the EU. I've had enough of the fannying around, in/out/veto nonsense. Go, and go quickly and quietly.

It is indeed , but their birthrate is way higher than ours .

Really? I thought you said that they all had anal sex in order to avoid making each other pregnant?

That was Africans, have you been waiting desparately for an opportunity to use that line ?

Oh do Africans not count as immigrants? Or do they stop having anal sex when they get to the UK?

I'd be fascinated to see the stats that back up ANYTHING you say.

Did anyone watch Panaroma last night. 600,000 illegal immigrants in the UK, what a mess. Some of them are even begging to go back home now, but the government has still not sent them back. January 2014 we have the prospect of more Bulgarians and Romanians coming to the UK for work. They say it will not be anything like the numbers we had from Poland, but I don't beleive it. I reckon we will have hundreds of thousands of people over here.

Where are all these people going to get work?
If they can't find work where do they go from here?
Are they going to end up like some of the people on Panorama, sleeping rough on streets?

And my point is, what is the sense of allowing more and more people over here, where we are in the middle of a recession. This is why the EU needs sorting, why we need to renegotiate, so we can control our borders properly. If we can't renegotiate, then we cant stop people coming over. So the only solution is getting out of the EU.

From January 2014 Bulgarian & Romanians will be able to freely live & work in the UK. I suspect that this will be like the influx of Poles but 10 times worse.

Very worrying, especially when you consider that formerly communist countries have a tendency to produce violent criminals.

Some interesting stats here from 2010

EU Migrants in other EU Countries: An Analysis of Bilateral Migrant Stocks | The Migration Observatory

The population of Poland is about 50% higher than Romania and Bulgaria combined.

There are already 2.2 million Romanians living outside of the country in the EU (compared to 1.7 million Poles). Romania has closer historical ties with France than the UK, which tends to have a big bearing on destination.

Also worth bearing in mind that, when Poland acceded to the EU in 2004, all the existing member states apart from 3 (the UK, Sweden and Ireland) imposed strong restrictions on their immigration for several years (including making it impossible for them to work) -- the so called "transition arrangements". Given the relative size of the three countries which let them in immediately, it's hardly surprising that so many Poles came to the UK (quite a few went to Ireland too). If Germany had been open to them, we'd have seen far fewer Poles in the UK.
This time, however, with Bulgaria and Romania, they will get access to all the EU countries at the same time, including the big economies of France, Italy and Germany, all of which are a lot closer to them, and in some cases have substantial existing communities of Romanians and Bulgarians. So all in all, it's unlikely to be a repeat of the Polish influx.

As a footnote, it's interesting how few of the people complaining about immigrants on here, seem to have any problem with the Spaniards, South Americans, Pole, Dane Slovak etc who've made such a massive contribution to our club's current success (both in the squad and on the management side).

Not half as awkward as the most earnest, PC, bore ever to have posted on the internet.
Sorry if this seems a little off-topic, but I'm curious: do you consider political correctness to be entirely pejorative?

Not entirely, but it can reach ridiculous levels.
That's fair enough, but to my mind it's far preferable to the alternative, which is the widespread acceptance of intolerant attitudes. No matter how 'mad' political correctness might seem to have gone, it seems like a small price to pay if it means that fewer people are subject to abuse on the grounds of gender, race, sexuality etc.

Any middle ground would be difficult to define; whereas some people, including me, don't think that political correctness has gone too far, others are very opposed to it. I don't buy the pseudo-libertarian argument that it's an assault on free speech. It just seems to me that an institutionalised rhetoric of tolerance is fundamentally a good thing and we should be pleased to live in a time where such an idea exists. Of course it's not going to cure the world of prejudice, but it seems to have gone some way in changing orthodox views, and to me that must be a positive.

I disagree , there was a thread on here yesterday where a poster's son had had the crap kicked out of him, he stated he hoped they get AIDS , and immediately someone with the same view as yourself challenged him about his comments ,implying they were homophobic, until they did , I had honestly not had one thought about negative connotations as to gays,I use this as an example of where I consider things have gone too far, there are other obvious ones which are dismissed as urban myths , but even when this proven untrue , people are prepared to argue until they are blue in the face about it.
