Blimey, I am heading for the hills then!
I have had all doors and windows open since 6am, and our living room dropped from 27 to 26 just shut them all at 7.30 because it went back up to 27.......would love 22!!

Climbing now to 24, hope it cools down tomorrow as I have a Site Day in Kings Cross (New Google Offices).

As you may imagine not looking forward to train journey up or down.

When do you predict it to peak on the sussex coast today Papa?

And when do you expect this cooler air to hit Chichester to Brighton area?

I'd expect the peak to be about midday / 1pm due to the heating from the sun, but we won't see the longer heating into the evening, as we saw yesterday. I'd expect somewhere in Sussex to hit 38c plus today and when the front passes in the evening we might get some showers or even thunderstorms (most will either be further West or East of us) and then more normal temps later in the night and tomorrow.

The front will progress West to East, so Chichester will see it 9 to 10pm and further East an hour or so later.

Ouch, I wouldn't want to be near London on train at the moment.
Went to the wittering yesterday, soaked my hat in the sea and put it on cooled me down nicely, I can feel a hat wetting moment coming on soon.
Could you do that while on the train?

I'd expect somewhere in Sussex to hit 35c plus today and when the front passes in the evening we might get some showers or even thunderstorms (most will either be further West or East of us) and then more normal temps later in the night and tomorrow.

Great!

So open up the doors and windows at 7 ish? And we should feel a cooling?

I've added an edit to my original post re timings, the main limiter on temps into the afternoon will be a stronger wind off the sea and increasing cloud cover, before the cooler air arrives later..

It feels a lot hotter in Worthing this morning, than it did at the same time yesterday!

It is. We started from a much lower base overnight into Monday.

My weather station didn't get below 24.1c overnight and I'm up to 27.2c already.

Looking forward to a cooler night...last night, despite a fan moving (I guess warm) air around, the average temperature in my bedroom was around 30c/85f give or take a degree. Uncomfortable.

That was despite having the blinds closed all day with curtains too to try and keep out the sun and heat.

An example of why we suffer here in Blighty when it is very hot - our houses aren't designed for it.

Our min (Withdean) was 24c. Not in a Stevenson screen, but no radiation effect in the nighttime dark.

The longstanding UK record was 23.9c on 3 August 1990.

Thanks Papa, I am very much a planner, so it helps having a local realistic idea.:)

Looks like the official record (set in Brighton btw) might be raised to 25.8c at Kenley in Surrey.

The difference between now and that night in 1990 is the lack of humidity otherwise it would have been horrendous.

Mercifully cooler here today after reaching 41.5 degrees yesterday.

It was supposed to be a little cloudy today, but instead the whole sky is a darkish grey and a distinct smell of distant woodsmoke in the atmosphere. I'm about 90 miles north of where the main wild fires are, so I don't know if it is a result of that...?

All the evidence would suggest that the answer is a yes. Stay safe.

I did wonder about it, so knowing that you are considerably more knowledgeable about weather etc, I really do appreciate your input.

Thankyou.

Thankyou.

The smell is the giveaway. It's scarey that we're starting to see wildfires getting closer and closer to home. Given just how dry it's been this year in Southern England and how dry the outlook remains, I'd expect fires to be a problem here this summer.
