I had my first recordplayer long before I started school, along with a stack of old 45s and a couple of albums given to me by a friend of my Dad's.

As a result of my young age, the first record I ever bought was this:

Sadly, I still have it!

Hither (sometimes Thither)
Musical Youth - Pass The Dutchie. I think it was the b-side i still refer to lyrically, concerning the theft of an apple pie and Dennis being responsible. I hope it was either about relentless social consumption with the giant drunken teeth of Dennis Thatcher chattering concurrently, or big, fat Dennis Taylor eating anything he could get his upside-down hands on whilst dreaming of 1987 and his midnight snooker finish.

Why didn't you get the Guy Mitchell version first?

Racist. ???
I was going to answer this by saying that I probably saw it performed on the Six-Five Special. But, having checked, it wasn't until five weeks after the Tommy Steele version got to Number One that Don Lang and the Frantic Five first belted out the theme tune to the show that changed the world.

It's always possible that I bought the record weeks after everyone else, of course.

And I see you can still buy it now for just £4 + £5 postage on eBay.

The very same with a 10/- voucher that I won in a twist competition. I put the other tanner to it.

I bought it in Sweetmans, in Meeching Road, Newhaven.

Now you're talking!

Birmingham's finest.

When I was still at school, we booked Carl Wayne and the Vikings for a Friday night dance to raise money for the fund to refurbish on old cinema organ that the school had bought.

Ah yes, the MOVE have quite a distinct family-tree, which had roots in Mike Sheridan and the Nightriders (which included Roy Wood), and grew such excellent branches as The Idle Race, then later ELO (Jeff Lynne seen fronting the Idle Race below)
