No, I think you'll find the old boy had his mind more on empire building. Europe dominated by a benevolent Britain - maybe something to replace the more distant empire lost.

Where is your proof? I think the above quote is unequivocal, he was a huge supporter of a united Europe having seen at first hand the horror of what could happen when European nations put their own nationalistic interests, before the common good, and embarked on a conflagration that consumed a generation

Unbelievably a few people have come on the Radio saying that the Obama speech has swayed it for them to Remain.
.

On the plus side the vote is 2 months away so these people and others who took notice of Obama can forget all about what he said.

It's pathetic that there are actually these people who fell for Obama's bull. They couldn't see he was just writing a downing street script.
They couldn't see the hypocrisy in the leader of the most independent country on earth trying to convince us to remain.

There are people out there short of a few brain cells and they are the ones who can be swayed either way.

You are correct. Churchill was very much in favour of a United States of Europe. The difference is he envisaged no part of this for the UK. We had our own Empire and interests

Why do you have to heap abuse on those who are undecided yet? You may consider yourself to be 100% right, and you maybe, I,personally am of the opinion that you are wrong, but I wouldn't call you mentally retarded for having a stance that I don't agree with.
If some people have climbed off the fence after hearing Obamas speech, surely it is a good thing that they are now engaged in the conversation, and to abuse them, just because you think they've been flim flammed, is, quite frankly, a bad show.

But, when he made the quote to Eden, the writing was already on the wall for Empire. He may have hoped we could hang on for a few more years, but above all, he was a realist, and would have seen that to join with a newly liberated Europe, as equal partners was our only path.

Sorry, don't have the literature that was available to me in the uni. library when I did my history and politics degree in the late sixties/early seventies, but you can bet your bottom dollar Churchill knew exactly where he want Britain to be in the hierarchy of European nations!

Not pompous.I just want you to go away.

Why would I leave? I enjoy a bit of political argy bargy, I have my own views that don't always align with others on here, but, I would not abuse them for their beliefs, and don't expect to be abused myself, for mine. If you feel I have outstayed my welcome, I can only apologise, but, I'm s afraid, I won't be going anywhere.

And I bet my bottom dollar it wouldn't be outside, with no say, an insignificant island on the edge of Europe, living of the scraps of countries still in the biggest trading block in the World

Really? Churchill was looking to build an empire at a time when independence was the watch word. The empire was in the process of being dismantled, not reinforced.after the second world war and even before that.
