[Albion] The Trossard "push"

I do feel referees should be more clever with VAR, by waiting until the phase of play has been completed, then use VAR to aid their decision making.

If the ball doesn't end up in the back of the net, theres nothing doing, but if it does (which it did today), take a look at the monitor.

That's not refs bottling decisions, just using technology to their advantage

This is my thinking with the initial post. If he feels there's a foul, great, allow the play to continue (as they do with offside) and then check it. We can't continue to allow human error (or the potential for human error) to dictate the outcome.

Weak AF decision. Those saying he probably wouldn't have scored need to give their heads a wobble.

Bookies would take money off you all day long at even money Trossard scores...

Never a foul in the first 150 years of organised football, imho not a foul in the current era of ref-backed diving.

The most minuscule of touches on the upper back in a pure leg race, ‘brought down’ a cheat only because he knew he’d screwed up.

The Sky commentator and pundits were spot on in their analysis from what I saw.

Absolutely this even the motd pundits agree no foul.

Can anyone stick up any of the replays? Why was this not reviewed? How can a clear goalscoring opportunity just be brushed aside by a ref who, for the most part had a good game.

Don’t review those. Ref made decision. End of. It’s not like offside.

Old fashioned refereeing error, the kind of thing we’d be moaning about every week but we now have VAR to take up that energy. A classic case of do you want more or less VAR than currently? If it’s less, you suck up the error and accept refs are fallible. Trossard should keep his arms down in future situations

I thought I saw a push, Tross pushed out an arm and the fella went down under contact.

It is soft as shite but certainly in keeping with the current rules.

I am with Ian wright and all of the other pundits. Not a push. He barely even touched him and the chap slipped. I would out that up there with the Burnley goal against Leeds. Shocking decision.

It wasn’t a foul but Trossard made it too easy for the ref to give it as soon as he raised his arms and touched the defender. He was always going to give the free kick at that point.

One of my biggest frustrations in football is when defenders are going back towards their goal and the attackers get too close and end up fouling them when there’s no need and likewise, Trossard didn’t need to raise his arms.

Having seen it again, the assistant who was level with them and close did not raise the flag and the ref, watching from a good distance, blew the whistle. I would have thought if it was a clear foul the assistant would give it.
Goalie did not really make an effort to stop it as the whistle had gone but I think there should have been a chance to see how it played out and use VAR if a goal was scored.

Just before Dan Burn was substituted we had a corner, 2 Wolves players were all over Burn who ended up on the floor, much more heavy handed than Trossard’s push, the ref didn’t see it obviously, why am I surprised?

The camera angles show it wasn’t a push. The ref was 25 yards behind, not keeping up with play. Sian Massey didn’t raise her flag and she was level watching every move.

Not sure if it is was the same one I saw but he was pulled to the floor from the corner that Webster hit the bar and then Swiss Andy hit the rebound over.

I agree this is pretty much where we are at. Stinking decision but if we’re ever to get out of the VAR wormhole, we’ve got to accept refs won’t ever get everything right. Maybe it was better when they got things wrong like this - in a split second - than now, when they watch it 30 times and still make a baffling decision.

If it had gone to VAR, would they have decided it was a ‘clear and obvious error’? Possibly not, because Trossard touched the defender. So they could think ‘no foul’ but also that it was understandable the ref gave it, and so not intervene. They’re, bizarrely, not actually judging the incident, but the referee. Which is one reason why its implementation is a crock of shit.

Correct. Technology is useful but referees can be idiots. Who knew?

Agreed. Not sure what the fuss is about. Soft free kicks like that are given in every game now
