As there seems to be a wave of nostalgia on the board today, were you one of the people stuck on THAT train?
Nottingham Forest -v- Brighton League Cup in 1979 I think.
We had three football specials that day and having swopped some tickets around I managed to get two together (me and girlfriend) on the third train. Spent about 13 hours on a train that didn't get to the game and eventually took us back to Brighton.
And we lost 3-1

I was.

And there were 2 trains (out of 3) turned back that night.

I was on the 3rd as well. We all listened to the game on the radio.

I turned down a place on one of the coaches going from Haywards Heath.:dunce:

We went on a coach from Worthing organised by ................ and remember leaving the service station on way back with barbecued chickens, boxes of sandwiches and all the tea and coffee urns.
''Not stopping then lads'' said the coach driver. '' No we`ll crack on its a long journey back'' someone said.

Made the Daily Mirror the next day if I remember correctly and no I have no regrets because they are robbing bastards in those places themselves. Anyone who went to games in those days will know what pub from Worthing we set out from.

The Clifton by any chance.

Went on a trip with them to Cambridge and on the way home the coach was impounded at Dorking due to an incident with some Bikers at Boxhill around midnight. Had Police escort back to Worthing great day out.

Went to Forest on one of the many King of the Road coaches that left Sunny Worthing that day. Sheer bedlam at all services up M1 that day as both Luton and Watford were travelling in numbers to their cup matches as well. Massive queues at all service station counters and everyone had finished their food on arrival at the tills so very little profit made
:lolol:

Despite the 2 trains not making it we were packed in like sardines that night and certainly gave Old Cloughie some stick.

I was on the Forest train, stuck in Kettering for hours.....

Did anyone go to the Town Hall to see the video of the match?

I was on that coach as well. First time I`d ever seen a whole coach arrested.

Was on a coach from Brighton. Things have obviously moved on:

my pal drank a bottle of Port on the coach on the way there, everyone else was pissed too

Luton fans scarves etc stolen from their coach on the way up

the coach was attacked by Forest fans with bricks on the way out of Nottingham, despite Police escort

the motorway service station cafe was closed on the way home so everyone simply raided the kitchens helping themselves to cooked chicken etc...

and yes we still went to see the video at Hove Town Hall...

Makes a day out at Withdean seem positively tame..

I was pretty young, skived off school and went by coach. Was amazed to see some rather 'game for a laugh' girl 'getting it on the back seat of the bus!! Quite literally had never seen anything like it ( and haven't since!)

I went, no problem getting there, or watching the game. Shame we were 3 down before Wardy got a decent ball in the mud and stuck it past Shilton to keep it....err..... a little more respectable than 3-0.

Err... didn't Wardy equalise to make it 1-1 just after half time then Forest scored twice??

No, it was a draw and it was in 1976. Went on to beat Ipswich (or Ipshit as we chanted) in the replay, then beat West Brom and then lost at Derby in a replay. What a season.

Notts Forest was a year or so later - fantastic atmosphere with every nutcase from Sussex there (or stuck on a train). We were packed like sardines, couldn't move, yet they kept a section next to us empty, waiting for the trains to arrive. I recall stories of people jumping off the trains and running down the tracks.

Christ, we had some nutters then!

That was a fantastic night out despite us losing. The younger supporters probably wouldn't understand just how big a game it was, Forest were European Champions at the time, in an era when you had to win the league to be in the competition, none of this modern day Champions League bollocks. Forest were not just the best side in England but in Europe too. Hard to believe if you look at them now.

A lot of people were amazed at the incredible support we had that night, if I remember right we had pretty much one side of the ground to ourselves (apart from the space saved for the two trains that didn't make it). Anyone know hao many Albion actually got there?
