Both top notch TBH. I've only ever seen Madness live, but that was Fantastic. Prince Buster is also up there with the best.

But I voted for "Both Quality", as they are. Although Rat Race & Pressure Drop have got to be in the top 50 songs of all time.

Can't imagine how mental it'd be at a Specials concert.

eh?

Madness were never proper ska. Specials have the songs, the pedigree, the personnel, the look, everything. It's an unfair comparison and the Specials piss all over Madness who are now nothing more than a sort of fun office party knees up act.

By the way - no one, not even the Skatalites beats Prince Buster for ska.

Madness did excellent versions of Prince Buster tunes mate, One Step Beyond alone, brought Buster's (and the Allstars, ahem) style back into focus brilliantly - it's got power and passion. The Specials are pale in comparison, too busy trying to sound like PB in 1964 - while the Nutty Boys brought it up to date.

I accept that creatively and muscially the Specials are probably better, which I shall see for myself in May, but the first single I bought was a Madness single, the first album I bought was a Madness album, the first gig.... yes, you get it now. So, it has to be the nutty boys for me.

When I have my hair short people tell me a look like Suggs too. WHich is nice.

Granted I don't know much about modern and new fangled music types, but I would have to say Madness... I mean when I was 7 I loved them, when I was young enough to appreciate the finer complexities and nuances of their undoubted commercial appeal and mainstream song writing technique.
The Specials were clever.

Madness were great at the start and have seen them a few times over the years but THE SPECIALS are in a different league!
Can't wait to go and see them in Brixton and Brum:yahoo::rave:

Honourable mention to 'Return of the Los Palmas 7' The greatest instrumental of the modern era (minus 'waiter' !)

Damn fine tune and first record I ever bought. I was on the Norfolk Broads with the 5th Worthing Boy's Brigade and we were in that creepy Norflok town where every shop is owned by Roy.

...and check this bass line out for a ska classic
