I work in Haulage and the fuel costs are killing the industry......and many other industries, the cost of goods in shops has a fuel cost too. The cost of the goods is rising mainly due to the cost of getting them to the shops in the first place. This isn't just an issue for car owners, it is/will hit everyone hard.

Sounds good. However i 'clock-on' 5/6 days a week at 4 am,no bus service for me,any idea's ? apart from walking.

I dont understand the logic behind choosing to live in the country and commute into town and then complaining about fuel costs. You could live in Stoke near your work or in Manchester near your wife's and the other one could take the 40 minute train journey. Instead you and your missus drive 23,000 miles a year just to get to work. Guess what? theres a cost to that, only a part of which is paid by you. The environmental costs and the resulting congestion resulting from people commuting 23,000 miles a year is paid for by everyone else.

Filled up the car yesterday at Asda cost £74, I almost cried. When I passed my test it was 76p per litre now almost double that

How long have you, worked for HM Govt ?

The most curious thing..
Public transport is not an available choice here for travel to and from work, so it costs me approx £50 a week in petrol without any other journeys. My monthly credit card bills have more than doubled.

For those to say you made a choice where to live and work, that is true but only up to a very small point. The choice was made a long time before the fuel prices shot up, when the commute was much more affordable. No pay rise in the past four years hasn't helped either, and the lower mortgage interest is cancelled by the overpayments I make to reduce the overall term of the loan and interest bill (hopefully) - which is also a choice.

No longer do any pleasure driving, thankfully my work mileage rate just about pays for other trips such as shopping etc. and I have a CBR600 for pleasure riding, mind you it will be getting tucked up in the Garage until Spring very shortly.

Incidentally I work (indirectly and occasionally) for Oil Companies and when you look at the money they spunk away on all manner of useless things (dont believe the Hype about the Private Sector being lean & mean -this particular bit isn't & never has been) you can see where the money goes. Plus our wonderful HM Govt. taking their cut.....

I think I'll have to up my Offshore Day Rate dramatically in revenge - mind you if I quadrupled it they probably would still sign it off!

p.s. What's wrong with Stoke, there are some nice bits - not Burslem obviously!

32 mile round trip for me everyday 5/6 times a week and we have cut back, down from two 1.6 cars, now we run two Clio's (1.2) models 'Herself' works in Manchester. Morrison's here £1.31.9 plus the voucher, lowest seen in Stoke at Esso £1.29.9. Public transport, like many rural area's is 'well forget it' sure Leek to Stoke return is available as a route (3 an hour between 7am and 6pm)at £4-90 and if you wish to travel just ONE stop it will cost you £1-90. Travel and fuel cost have become a serious issue ?

In the past couple of years we have gone fron a 2 car family to 1 car. my partner needs the car to run our girls to school which is to far to walk and public transport is no/no my partner also works there. I work in the middle of nowhere and silly hours shiftwork days & nights 10 miles from our house. To save money 2 years ago i outed my car & bought a honda 100cc twist & go scooter for £300 off ebay and i have used that every day since. 50mph everywhere past queing traffic.when i am feeling down about not being in a warm car in winter im soon smiling when i go and fill up with petrol and it only costs me £5 and that'll last me 3 days. Now we are looking to get a smaller engined car. Unless you have deep pockets the cost of fuel is hitting us all.

When I passed my test in 1961 a gallon of petrol was 4s (20p) using the historic price calculator that equates to £3.39 today. The cheapest fuel around this area is at ASDA is £1.31 a litre and that equates to £5.83 agallon so considerably dearer pro rata.

Swings and roundabouts really - we race cars so we can't really complain, its part of the territory, my road car is pretty economical but the state of the roads in this country makes it nigh on impossible to bring down maintenance costs, 2 new front springs this year alone - have you seen how many springs Burton are pumping out due to the breakage rates....anyhow what I will say is what is most galling is the difference between what we here in the UK pay for fuel and what my parents in Australia pay for theirs. Same corporations dishing it out at the pumps, but near double the price here. Un-bloody-believable, taxes, taxes and more taxes - driving cars will soon become a luxury and public transport in this country cannot take the slack, frankly it aint great.
