The postal strike [Merged]

Are there more strikes booked in/planned/whatever it is called, after this one is finished?

Next week the strikes will take the form of functional strikes within Royal Mail. They will be 24 hour strikes by each function on different days, e.g Monday Deliveries, Tuesday Distribution, Wednesday MDECs, Thursday Mail Centres etc etc.

Worringly JB I have just recieved my post.
My depot has (I thought) a few staff, mainly newbies coming in, to sort, but if the post is getting out, is this the beginning of the end? I always thought 4 days was asking to much, I know I really had to think about it.
I think the Union may well have shot itself in the foot.

I live in central Brighton and haven't received any post since the strikes started.
The strike is working RM are back at the negotiating table,

"The talks are now at a critical stage with only a few issues left to be resolved," said a TUC spokesman.

They've probably also hastened the demise of RM. While I understand the need to strike over what they felt were unfair demands being put upon them, all that they are going to achieve ultimately is the collapse of the firm.

Not Luton! Thank God

But is that maybe what the unions want, forcing the RM back into being run by the Government, with a public subsidy either through cash or through a monopoly.

Royal Mail management and the Government have hastened the demise of Royal Mail. It is Royal Mail management who have not bothered to challenge the biased regualation that we now have to work under.
Did you realise that our Government could prevent TNT(Dutch) and DHL (German) from competing with Royal Mail until the postal network in both Holland and Germany are fully liberalised like in the UK?

This is from the European Parliament website:

To prevent any distortion of competition until markets are opened up to competition, the committee said that postal service providers from countries with a reserved area must not meanwhile be granted an authorisation to operate in countries such as Sweden, Finland, and the UK, where postal service markets have been fully opened. This means that liberalising Member States may refuse authorisation to operators which are granted a reserved area in another Member State (reciprocity clause).

Why is our own Government doing this to a company that it owns?

It is owned by the Government now and you can argue it is run by the Governement as they appointed Allan Leighton as Chairman.

There will be no clock turning back.
If RM were to got breasts up, TNT (for which Leighton is on the board, please tell me how that works) or maybe Deutchpost would step in.

Damn, another day's pay lost, I hope The TUC are right, because I just can't keep this up for much longer, esp as that's another day lost next week.

Re Leighton & TNT, it's discussed so 'matter a factly' in our office I assumed it to be true. When I can be bothered I will investigate further.
