If it was a studs up lunge how did he manage to "stamp" on someone that is beneath him. Surely the studs must have been pointing down.Ergo you are on a wind-up.

Did I say anything about a stamp? No. It was a dangerous tackle/lunge and therefore a red in my opinion.

Having just watched it a few times, Barnes thought about it then jumped out the way, landing on the burnley player who jump in two footed and should have been sent off, simple as that.

this end of !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The burnley player also went in with both feet

True. I wonder if Burnley supporters have concocted similar and fanciful stories of how McGann was trying to avoid Ashley's lunge by putting his feet together and sliding them under Barnes challenge?

At the risk just for a second of having an ounce of sympathy for the ref doesnt the fact that, even on multiple replays, nsc cant decide if it was a one red, two reds etc mean his split second decision to red card Barnes is at least understandable? But how he failed to send off their player for retaliation is beyond me. Thats the baffling part of this decision for me and, with the help of his assistants, the easiest decision he had to make all afternoon.

I think that sums it up. The Barnes red is at least debatable - was he jumping out of the way of the tackle or stamping? But it was a two-footed challenge from the Burnley player who also then throttled Barnes when he was on the ground. Clear red. Not only did McCann not get a booking, he was not even spoken to. Shocking.

I don't know. I mean a) this is an internet site, people will disagree on the colour of the pitch at the amex. b) there are people who only come here when they can complain, and will argue it's a red just so they have something to complain about, though won't admit it, c) some people want to believe we have a discipline problem and this being a legit red card allows them to add to their argument and d) there are some people who just look for any excuse to criticise barnes, though they won't admit it either.

I wouldn't take people disagreeing on an internet site as proof that it is hard for a professional ref to judge properly. It's the internet, there isn't anything on the internet that doesn't result in a disagreement.

That's not to say I don't think the ref deserved all his criticism. I noticed several incidents he got right (first to spring to mind is an incident when dunk raised his foot and almost kicked the burnley player in the face while challenging a high ball, and the crowd seemed to act as if it was the worst injustice ever.

If that tackle was played 100 times in different matches 99 times would result in a red for the Burnley palyer and once for Barnes.

The Vincelot red was also very soft, their player was mixing it as well. Again if that weas replayed 100 times on most occasions it would result in a telling off of both players or a yellow card.

To those using screen grabs to condemn Barnes, can you do a series of these showing the incoming Burnley player with both his feet off the ground and lunging out of control at Barnes leading to his jump to avoid injury (as seen by the earlier screen shot, which has no sense of depth as could actually show Barnes still in the air and not making contact at any point)

From my view in the South end of the WSU Barnes was clearly just trying to avoid a dangerous tackle which should have earnt the Burnley player the red card - why do you think so many were applauding the red card? - the answer, because we all thought it had been shown to the Burnley player who was reckless and deserved it and NOT to Barnes.

This picture looks quite bad, but then it looks like he is kicking the ref, or falling over backwards over the defender

Well it looks like the ref was influenced by McCanns protests, he was not evan looking, this clearly shows how barnes was taken out. Terrible decision

It's a hulk hogan leg drop of doom to the burnley player's lower back. How vicious.

Shouldn't a referee get a large majority of decisions right (especially the important ones) - isn't that his job? Yes, he called some free-kicks correctly. Well done that man.

This thread is taking 'blindly' supporting our players to another level.
Did no one else think that Barnes had lost it after Vincelots' sending off and was showing his spiky side when he deliberately lunged at Mcann and put us in the shit?
Definite red, although Mcann should have also gone.

Both should have gone... no excuses for Barnes as for Vincelot I havent seen anything.

I can live with the red cards but the stupidity of Reyes beggars belief... Its really the last thing we needed. I think our position in the table this season is unbelievable considering the bad luck and the behaviour of some of our players this season. Ive never known a season like it.

Have said several times it looked a perfectly reasonable red to me. Think of it this way - if that had been Paul Scholes, 98% of people would be screaming for him to go (if fact, if that had been Joey Barton, it probably would have been 99%).

Now, what the Burnley player deserved, that's a different matter, but wasn't the question.

No red for Barnes. Ref got it wrong. If he wasn't sure then do try calling it. There is absolutely no debate over their guy grabbing Barnes throat, Straight red for him.
