The only decent teams the Cowboys played against last year were Stanford, who seemed to massively overrated hanging around at #3 all year with a cup cake schedule and Oklahoma who were fading fast by the time Oke St blew them out, plus he had Blackmon to throw to which he did most of the time.
Throwing well against the likes of Tulsa and Louisiana - Lafayette is not the same as taking on the AFC North. Unless he has vastly improved in the Browns training camp I see McCoy being back under center by week 5.
McCoy is no great shakes but he has had a bit of raw deal in Cleveland, their receivers were awful last year. He put a lot of passes on the numbers but they kept dropping it. Holmgren hasn't done much to improve this area either. All they have done is take Travis Benjamin in round 4 from The U. I bet Ed Reed is shaking in his boots!
TR is going to be flogged from day one and if he doesn't perform (I think he'll have very average numbers) they'll have to rely on Weedon's arm (again average) and piss poor receivers.
The QB position has been a revolving door in Cleveland since the days of Bernie Kosar and I think Weedon will be another QB who'll be told to watch the door on his way out...........with Holmgren the next to follow.
McCoy is a tryer but doesn't have the arm to succeed in the NFL, he also can't read a pro defence quickly enough. I was gutted when we spent a 1st round pick on Weeden, I'm sure he would have dropped into the 2nd round, but I don't think there was a WR worth having either once the Titans had taken Kendall Wright. With hindsight a line backer might have been a good idea as Fujita is suspended and Gocong is out for the season.
At least we'll have a watchable offence this year, Weeden has looked OK in training camp and at least we now have a deep threat to keep defences honest. You said we only took Benjamin, but we did also pick up Josh Gordon in the supplementary draft who has the ability to be a number 1 WR and hopefully will contribute something along with Greg Little, who I can see having a good season. A lot of the drops last year were down to McCoy throwing too high or behind the receiver, so I'm optimistic that this year will see a reduction in that area.
If we can at least threaten with the passing game that should give Richardson an opportunity to make some big gains too.
Go Browns.
