EU institutions, business and citizens will have less access to financial markets, finance and legal experts in London. just as its a disadvantage for general UK business to have restricted access to larger EU market, it would be a disadvantage to restrict access to the larger UK finance market. Institutions here are allowed to freely trade in instruments there, but not vice versa, so an office in Londone can trade markets in both jurisdictions, a office based in Paris cant - which is more restricted?
People have to realise finance is global and powerful.

A way will be found for an EU-UK finance deal.

Some business folk had been expecting a PM briefing at 1500. But interesting to see if that holds given apparent delays.

its far from ideal, we'll see how much is resolved in recognition of equivalence in coming months. i expect the EU to stand their ground though, except areas like clearing where centralisation is important.

I'm sorry but did you read the document I attached. What you have written is the complete opposite of what has actually happened.

We have granted the EU equivalence for EU businesses to operate in the UK in most areas.
The EU has not granted equivalence for UK business to trade in the EU (expect for a couple of short term areas).

How does this put EU businesses at a disadvantage ? ( maybe in just one of the areas highlighted)

This thread is simply about the deal which seems to have been struck between the UK and the EU.

I personally believe the deal will pass into law because the only alternative is a No Deal. And is looking much better than May's deal.

Is anyone else relieved?

I know that Dick Head has a well deserved reputation for starting match threads early, but you don't think it's starting to look like you may have been a little 'premature' with this one ? :lolol:

i did and i understand the implications, its best left to the institutions themselves to work through them.

anyway i note you werent aware this wasnt part of the current negotiation, its all rather moot.

"Boris Johnson is clearly anxious about what the ERG will make of the deal, especially where key aspects like fishing are concerned, and wants them on board.

PM ringing round brexiteer MPs to brief them on the outline of the deal, which is still being finalised in Brussels"

We will have to hope the 27 are all on board with the deal, some might get shirty and play their sovereignty card.

Labour will not vote against the deal in the Commons next week and Sir Keir Starmer has been strongly hinting that he will whip his MPs to vote in favour. He has said that the party will vote in the national interest, and that no deal (the alternative) is clearly not in the national interest.

Such a pity that they didn't care about the National interest over May's deal.

I was very aware it isn't part of the current negotiation which was why I was able to publish what the actual rules for governance are, and show that you were contradicting them by claiming UK companies had access to EU markets, when it was the complete opposite.

Not for the first time, you are going round and round in circles.

And with that I'm done. Have a great Xmas :bigwave:

"Senior members of the group (ERG) have already welcomed Johnson’s imminent deal as the “Christmas Eve Agreement”, a reference to the 1998 Belfast Good Friday Agreement that secured peace in Northern Ireland.

Indications from senior figures within the ERG suggest that many of its members will accept the compromises negotiated by Johnson and Lord Frost."

1. I want to see some evidence as to how Britain will become more free and prosperous from this Deal as compared with what we had.

2. I look forward to the NHS receiving their cheque for £350 million extra funding on 7th January, and every week thereafter, forever.

***UK and EU agree post-Brexit trade deal***

A historic deal on the UK’s future trading and security relationship with the European Union has been struck on Christmas Eve, a week before the end of the Brexit transition period.

The European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen and chief negotiator Michel Barnier will hold a press conference shortly, the EU said.

From the BBC: Here is the government's statement: "Everything that the British public was promised during the 2016 referendum and in the general election last year is delivered by this deal."

"We have taken back control of our money, borders, laws, trade and our fishing waters

"The deal is fantastic news for families and businesses in every part of the UK.

"We have signed the first free trade agreement based on zero tariffs and zero quotas that has ever been achieved with the EU.

"The deal is the biggest bilateral trade deal signed by either side, covering trade worth £668bn in 2019.

"The deal also guarantees that we are no longer in the lunar pull of the EU, we are not bound by EU rules, there is no role for the European Court of Justice and all of our key red lines about returning sovereignty have been achieved.

"It means that we will have full political and economic independence on 1st January 2021."

"A points-based immigration system will put us in full control of who enters the UK and free movement will end.

"We have delivered this great deal for the entire United Kingdom in record time, and under extremely challenging conditions, which protects the integrity of our internal market and Northern Ireland’s place within it.

"We have got Brexit done and we can now take full advantage of the fantastic opportunities available to us as an independent trading nation, striking trade deals with other partners around the world."

That’s the Boris bull shit version. I now look forward to reading some proper analysis of the deal and how it’s better than the current arrangement.
