But, I blame a poorly thought out system to keep people in work, its open to abuse and results on poor productivity.

Sadly, the furlough system was always going to be abused. It had to be brought into existence in literally days to prevent employers rushing to make many millions redundant.

It met universal approval on the day it was announced eg Ian Blackford and Len McCluskey on Newsnight, and appears still rated highly now. So much so, the whinging has started already that employers will have to contribute a bit more from August in many sectors.

The biggest fraud, probably going on already, but it will mushroom, is employers claiming furlough when staff have returned to work.

According to the BBC this morning, fraudsters have also successfully targeted Universal Credit during this crisis, at a huge cost, taking advantage of the speedy response to get cash to the genuinely needy.

Human nature, there’ll always be a significant part of society who are criminally dishonest.

Expect prosecutions in the years to follow.

I know companies that have made people redundant and put them on gardening leave/furlough till sept so they don’t have to pay up the notice period

Australia have had a scheme called "Job Keeper".

Employers have to demonstrate their business has been effected in reduction in turnover, they then can apply for a grant to contribute to subsidise employee wages.

However, employees are still working if their employer has work they could do
