[FPTP person here].

Almost 2/3’s of the Commons on 39% of the vote is absurd, almost undemocratic. No sympathy for Reform, but for the Green’s etc pretty unfair.

More worryingly, for Labour a fragile mandate going forward. In 97 it was obvious to me Blair would win 3 elections with a fair wind. Remember he was up against people the country would never warm to eg IDS.

Labour will have to work their socks of with serious strategy and policies. No relying on gimmicks like Cool Brittania.

I absolutely believe that Labour *will* work their socks off. There’s a good team there.
And, if you consider where Labour were just 4 years ago, it’s pretty amazing.

Sir Robert Buckland fed up with 'performance art politics and saying things that are untrue'. His party.

Devastating.

Lots on Twitter about Jeremy Hunt looking likely to lose his seat to the Lib Dems in Godalming, Surrey. For those who don’t know, Godalming is a very affluent parish town near Guildford and a Tory safe seat.

This looks like THE Portillo moment and Hunt would become the first ever current Chancellor of the Exchequer to lose his seat.

Yeah, sorry for baiting you. But Reform will support any alternative to FPTP that will give them more seats. Which they would (give them more seats). Because that's what more fairness delivers.

Only if you think the system you want to replace FPTP with will not affect the GE outcome, would not make a fairer change, would you be correct that changing FPTP would not help Farage.

QED.
I'm not arguing that changing the system wouldn't help Farage, in the short term, anyway. My fears for the future notwithstanding.

I don't think anybody senior in Reform really wants to change the system anyway. They might moan about it now because in the short term they'd get more seats and it'd be weird if they didn't. But the likes of Farage want to lever themselves into power and influence and money. Probably by putting pressure on the Conservatives or directly taking them over. Making the system more representative and making it harder for a single party to have real power doesn't help him do that.

That's not an argument in favour or against of any system, it's a comment on how slimy Farage is.

More Sir Robert Buckland: The Tories are like 'bald men arguing over a comb'. If the loonies take hold of the party 'that would be disastrous and they would end in the abyss'.
