As an A'Level teacher (left it behind now) I can say A'Levels are certainly not easier now than when I took them etc. The differences are ....

a) Coursework, although it is thorough and needs to be worked on, it is not the same as doing an exam and the pressures that go with that. This is fairer in my opinion as it gives the student an opportunity to show what they can do, as they would in work, but it is open to and has been abused by a lot of students.

b) A shift in emphasis to move A'Levels and GCSEs closer in style and not have a huge gap in standard, they require slightly less fact and slightly more reasoned arguement in many subjects.

If what you are saying is true, then in 30 years there has been a mayor shift in the intelligence of young people in the UK. This defies natural evolution.

Believe me, I interview for jobs some of this new breed of 'super intelligent' people fresh from university. Dont make me laugh.

But good luck anyway
:D :D :D :D

Well done, it was great setting out to Uni for the first time, I am REALLY envious as I had so many drug and alcohol fueled experiences, met my current wife and travelled a lot. Oh and did some lesson type things once in a while :bounce:

No Uncle C your missing the point here, they do not rely on one off final exams now in most areas, so many students who struggle with this (and it is not a definitive sign of intelligence, to pass an exam) fell by the wayside. Coursework gives them a chance to show what they can do and learn in a more practical sense over a period of 2 years, rather than remembering stuff learnt over 2 years and it being assessed in 6 hours of silent written exams.... Just means more students can perform, but plenty of idiots with no common sense passed A'Levels in my day and still will. Qualifications get you an interview, you get the job...

And your choosing to miss my point.
Course work is easier to get through, with educational aids such as the Internet, calculators etc. Often performance at work is not the ability to slug away at something for as long as it takes to get it right.

Regarding qualifications and interviews.
At one time a 1st Class Honours Degree was a very rare beast indeed and you would walk into most jobs easily. Mere mortals relied on 2nd Class Honours. Even a 3rd Class held credibility in the job market.

Nowadays, with lower standards, 3rds are seldom offered interviews. My industry (Pharmaceuticals) found that the now plentiful supply of 1st and upper seconds is just about all that have the necessary intelligence.
