My main gripe with new passport was not so much the speed of its receipt but more the speed it gets me back in to the country. Just doesn’t work at automated passport gates at Gatwick. I did ask and was told it was something to do with my surname. I knew Halfa Escobar would catch me out one day.

Our 4 always work at Gatwick or Heathrow.

But we see people giving up.

As an aside, the helpful Germans have now added anyone with a residents permit to the EasyPass gates in the Germany; I dont have to wait in line anymore.

Are you able to gain German citizenship?

The SINGLE benefit of Brexit, our passports have a load of interesting stamps in. I’ve an old passport somewhere with the same, when travelling overseas seemed a bit more exotic.

Yes, you can apply after 8 years and I have been here 10. But I will wait until the dual-citizenship laws change, which is hopefully during the summer. I do not want to give up my UK citizenship. I have an imperpetuity live/work visa, plus my passport works in the gates, so there is no immediate rush for me.

some people really have no idea how to use the gates correctly. Passport in the wrong way, look at the facial recognition, look down, look up, it really is painful to watch. Use correctly and your through in about 30 seconds.

I have long advocated that there should be ‘training airports’. The equivalent of a loan to USG before being able to progress to the main ones.

Auto gates are easy to use. Just not if you have an epassport that doesn’t have permissions. Border control informed me that this is not unusual for certain circumstances such as names on wanted lists, common names.

I think that’s pretty common, isn’t it ? We used to use our residents permits through the gates in and out of Singapore thereby bypassing the queues.

It's painful. Get to the front of the queue, then only start taking their belt off, getting electricals out of their bags etc. They should be sent to a different queue if they don't have everything ready to go in a box immediately
