Verdicts on the Arcade Fire album?

First impressions for me are positive. I thought they'd gone down a law of diminishing returns, cul de sac with The Suburbs. The new one has a variety of different moods but the band I keep thinking of is Talking Heads. I think in time it will be my second favourite behind Funeral.

I see the press has been a little lukewarm (http://www.metacritic.com/music/reflektor/arcade-fire), I suspect this is because it was emabargoed until the last minute and some mags wrote reviews from 1 listen (such as Drowned in Sound), this is definitely a grower.

EDIT: Here's a stream - http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/stream-arcade-fires-reflektor-20131024.

I've finally got round to listening to the new Arctic Monkeys record as well (I'd put it off as the 2 before this had bored the pants off me), it's remarkably good. Unmistakably them but totally different to what they've done before.

Oxycanta III

it really has the technicality, intelligence, and emotiveness of pure liquid silk.

same here, only I'll probably have to wait a while for it to be available here - I thought about the whole video stream thing but would rather wait to put the needle in the groove and hear it that way first, that's just me. There are some very enthusiastic reviews (I just read Rolling Stones and Pitchfork, the latter got themselves into a right froth over it).

Go to Pitchfork or Rolling Stone, gushing reviews on both.....

I see James Blake won the Mercury. Whilst it did my pocket no favours (see earlier posts) I have no quarrel with that at all. He's a worthy artist and it's a good album. Fair enough.

I bought How To Stop Your Brain In An Accident by Future Of The Left yesterday and going to have a listen in a bit. It has some excellent reviews- this is a band that have been sorely overlooked and should be far better known. They began as Mclusky and released three albums and this their fourth as FOTL. If you like your music loud, fast and with humour then I strongly recommend.

It's brilliant. I seem to be in a minority in thinking that their last album was their best but truthfully all four are great. Add in Falko's work with McClusky and that's 7 albums in a row and no sign of a dip in quality.

He's fast becoming this generation's Mark E Smith. They deserve so much more love from the public at large than they get, it's almost inexplicable to me. I think if they were American they'd get a far better deal, anyone that likes Patton era Faith No More should get a lot from this record.

Right, culture time. If you're into your performance dance, there's a night at the Dome next Friday with an evening of dance perfromed to a FOTL soundtrack.

Blimey! Not sure what I would make of that. Will have to investigate.

Totally agree that they should have had more recognition than they have. 7 albums and each one is a winner. The Plot Against Common Sense was criticised more for its lyrics I think than the music but I enjoyed the likes of Robocop 4 and Failed Olympic Bid. Just played the latest through once and fantastic on first listen. Bobby Zamora gets a name check in Jonny Borrell Afterlife!

Possibly the last ever album from Motorhead, Aftershock, not too shabby at all.
