Boring By Sea
I saw Julia Holter last night. It was one of those gigs where all the stars alligned and it led to a truly mesmerising and beguiling performance...my gig of the year. The venue played a huge part, a former DDR radio station complex by the river in deepest darkest East Berlin where Nils Frahm has his studio. She performed in the main studio recording room. No stage, the 6 piece band performed on the floor in the round and we all sat around them. There’s no bar inside the studio either, which I think helped the atmosphere. We sat in appreciative silence and watched and listened; I was literally sat on the floor 3 feet from her and the band. The sound was perfect, as you’d expect from a purpose built recording room. It was incredible to sit so close and see and hear the instruments and performance at such close quarters. And as for Julia, a little nervous at first (probably due to the set up) but she quickly settled and she and the band helped me drift off somewhere nice. The set lifted mainly from her dazzling new album, with all its little twists and surprises, punctuated with 5 or 6 from her back catalogue; silhouette was sublime. Her music has many quiet and delicate moments and the silent crown played their much needed part; I’m not sure how her new album will come across in a typical concert venue with the usual chitter chatter etc. Maybe she needs to go down the Nils Frahm and Max Richter route and play opera and symphony venues? I have no idea how long she played for, I lost track of time.

And to round off the perfect evening I sat in the downstairs bar with a glass of Chilean Cabinet Sauvignon and bumped into her. Had a brief chat about the gig, the venue and the next show.

A bit gushy but it’s a true reflection of the night. In short, she’s an exceptional talent, she really is.

Sounds perfect. I’ve seen her live a few times, mostly at the komedia but nothing as intimate as you experienced. I haven’t listened to the latest album but must get round to it.

That’s that for 2018. 33 gigs ending with an intimate Nils Frahm performance in the same space I saw Julia Holter (see post from a week ago on Holter for description) . I walked around his set up as well, **** me he has a lot of stuff. He’s a warm and funny guy as well, spent quite a bit of time talking, joking and at times goofing about.

Here’s to 2019.

I like Electric Soft Parade. I was once having a fag outside a pub and one of them also fagging complimented me on my Super Furry Animal tee shirt. We had a nice chat about how we liked the band, the art work etc but we both had a blank mind as to the artist, we ran through a list of Peters to no avail. He later came over to me in the pub and said “Peter Sutcliffe” :lolol: Eventually we remembered it was Peter Fowler. Probs had to be there but it was funny for me and he was a super nice guy.

Sounds like Tom. ESP really are one of Brighton's great musical treasures. Should be a cracking start to the new year.

Thought i’d reinvigorate this thread with the exciting news (for a select few!) that Beak> play Concorde on 21 May.

Yes, spotted that. Have you seen them before? They've only come to my attention through their most recent album.

Question: has there been a 2019 Live Music Thread started? If not, someone might oblige.

No not seen them before and like you it was the last album that switched me onto them. Looking forward to it.

Quite a few gigs coming up with Mono, Loop, Pigs x7, Sleaford Mods and of course Messthetics on Sunday! Also considering Necks and Joshua Redman Still Dreaming in London and what seems to be the annual Sun Ra Arkestra visit to Lewes.

Patty Griffin is playing at the Southbank on 15 May. That's the one gig that I was desperate to attend. Tickets go on sale on 30th Jan. It's irrelevant now. My girlfriend has booked a holiday for us in Krakow, returning on 16th May. Decided against seeing Ryan Adams at RAH. It's too vast. I swear that the stage and the balcony must be in different postcodes!

I've got a three day, or night, run of Messthetics, Songhoy Blues and a trip to Craven Cottage coming up. Not sure if there's too many others on my list, but good to see that gig announcements are starting to drip in.

Good call getting this thread up again. Not listened to much Beak except for a couple of tracks on the radio. Will give the album a listen over the weekend.

Bloc Party at Concorde2 when they toured Silent Alarm first time around is one of most very favourite gigs. Probably can't afford to see them this time. Do you know how much the tickets are?
