Saw Sons of Kemet at Komedia last night. Utterly extraordinary: two drummers, a tuba player and a saxophonist/clarinet player. The crowd loved them, unfortunately there were only 40 to 50 people there, as they deserved a far larger audience.

Saw Flash Bang Band and Pontiak at the Green Door Store last night both excellent. Absolutely love that venue, can't believe Gallows are playing their next month.

The Ex were the best "proper" band I've seen this year, last night. Incredibly good, this lady can drum.

35 years into their career and they are releasing their strongest material and doing their best live shows. Last night they played exclusively from their last 2 records and every song sounded like a classic.

They aren't very far from Swans as "best live band in the world" IMHO. If anything they have a few more tricks up their sleeves but Swans visceral, cathartic power wins out for me.

They completely overshadowed the rather good return of my favourite Brighton post-punkers Cold Pumas after an 18 month absence.

Thanks for posting this: most impressive. Be sure to let us all know if they do play down here again.

Brighton - In your face
Umberto - Outer Church night at Green Door Store this evening. Albumen, a little surprised it's not on your radar, you quite like your moody, synthy gear don't you?

Also, this week's show features local types The Sticks and Adolescent as well as forthcoming gigees Bo Ningen, Dean Wareham (sort of) & Factory Floor

Next week's is going to be a TGE special.

I think I saw you James but wasn't sure so didn't fancy picking the wrong person. What did you think? It was a little more dancey than I was expecting but pretty interesting. He was playing all the keyboards and tweakers to the drum backing track I think.

Understood, could be embarassing! I was stood right at the back next to the mixing desk for Umberto. I liked it, I was expecting the 4/4 as his recent material has been down that avenue, however, by the high standards of Outer Church headliners it probably wasn't one of the better ones I've been to. Really liked Wrong Signals, I thought he was abit like some unholy alliance beteen The Field, **** Buttons and OPN. Eva Bowen (is that right?) was alright, great projections but there wasn't much dynamism to the music meant that I got a little bored 20 mins in.

Nice to see a good turnout, it's one of my favourite nights in Brighton, I think Joseph does a really laudable job putting it on.

Thanks for that. If I had more time and money, I'd book a holiday, see Neil Young, see Iceland and its geezers, and go to that ATP. As it is, I'm just sorely tempted and contemplating how I can wangle it.

I need to start home schooling the kids. Festivals like this would be an essential part of their education. I think the Bowlie Weekender at Camber was my favourite festival ever. Good old ATP.

Which one was that? I went to the Shellac-curated one in about 2002 which was the festival to end all festivals.

That's a good line-up, but methinks the 2002 eclipses it: P W Long and Cheap Trick stood out that weekend for me. See:

"Sonic Youth were absolute rubbish" is not a phrase I've uttered, or even heard, before.

Well, most years have been pretty good at ATP. Re Sonic Youth: I think their performance polarised opinions - there are a few pages on it in the book Psychic Confusion: The Sonic Youth Story. They played about 4 songs, the first one being an interminable 15 minute one chord song with no vocals, no change in tempo, nothing interesting going on at all. If you were being charitable, you might call it a "drone", but drones usually have texture and atmosphere, and are a bit like staring at a lava lamp - there's interest to be found, if you're looking for it. No interest here. I've seen them six times and this was easily the worst. Possibly I was expecting a usual festival kind of set, but, as a lover of Sonic Youth, I was sorely disappointed. Probably the most disappointing live thing I've seen.
