I thought Swans were at their usual pummellingly excellent best. The two new tracks are obviously works in progress and the tracks off the new album work well with more time and space for them to build and develop in a live setting.

Would be interested in hearing about stars of lid. I'm too busy at work to do a gig on a Monday night!

Am off to see Swans again on Friday and then go go penguin and melt yourself down next month.

Thanks for the heads up on MYD. Missed them last time they played, as was on the long haul back from Middlesborough. I'm no fan of The Haunt as a venue, but I reckon they'll make it work.

Feeder were great at the Roundhouse last night. Good to have them back. Goat at the corn exchange next for me.

Well, that Parquet Courts gig was an utter joy. Not seen a band that tight for a long time. Paced the gig perfectly and got a hell of a lot of songs out, superb.

Really really good.

Great.

I missed MYD too as I was also on that long trek from the grim north. I did see them at love supreme a couple of years ago and they were really enjoyable.

We've spoken about the outer edges of jazz before, are you aware of the rare noise label? There's some wonderful stuff on their roster including a Scottish group called free nelson mandoom jazz who I've just discovered.

Had a very enjoyable night at Patterns on Monday for The Duke Spirit.

And watching Liela Moss in action is always a treat :)

I can no longer make Lloyd Cole on Monday. Somewhat gutted given the apparent set list...real life interfering is a real pisser sometimes.

SET LIST SPOILER WARNING

The Mission and The Buzzcocks last week, both great if you're trying to relive a misspent youth, ultimately just paying for the pensions of Hussey, Diggle (both of whom have aged well) and Shelley (who looks like a fat camp Tom Jones).

Man of Moon on Tuesday, excellent dour Scottish duo.

Just found out that I'm working on that MYD night, which is most annoying. Will check out that lot.
I did get a CD from Roller Trio, and while I can see the appeal, it doesn't quite work for me. What it did do was clarify that I'm really not keen on the guitar, drums, sax combo -- I think that's also why I didn't get on with Troika. For avant-garde jazz trios, I much prefer bass and drums, with either a piano (EST, Phronesis) or sax (The Thing, Fire, etc).

I enjoyed the gig but I thought the crowd were terribly flat. May have been asking for too much given that last time I saw them was about 2 in the morning at Primavera where there was inevitably a more raucous atmosphere, but I thought it was noticeably flat for the kind of band PC are.

Stars of the Lid were pretty fantastic. Great venue to see them in as the church setting with the lights was very atmospheric. Slightly strange set as they played one hour long piece which was amazing, and the few hits and pieces they played afterwards felt like something of an afterthought - including a very odd end where it seemed no one really knew if they were done or not. Very very glad to have seen them at St Mary's though.

Holy **** pretty good the other night. You do need to be near the front though to appreciate them properly, pushed our way in that direction for the last couple of songs and encore.

given the amount of goons who chat and treat gigs as an extension of the pub I suggest this approach to most gigs these days.

Funny you should say that. Was far too much chat even in the middle where we began. And the problem with a loud band like Holy **** is that the talking becomes shouting.

I've just booked this festival in Leipzg http://www.audio-invasion.de

It utilises the multi-roomed Gewandhaus and kicks off with the haus orchestra playing for an hour and then it's a mish-mash of visual and performance art and DJs.

Also taking a punt on Banks and Steelz. I like their album but know nothing about their respective bands.

Anyone been to the Rosehill (the old Rosehill Tavern) for live music yet?

Mammal Hands are playing there in November and I'm hoping to pop over for it. Just wondering what the venue is like.
