I'll give it a go.

Sooner or later there has to be a screen adaptation of a game that isn't absolute donkey do.

Still scarred by the awful Resident Evil series on Netflix but I'd like to give this a go. Shame it's on Now TV as I don't really want yet another streaming subscription and Virgin don't have Sky Atlantic.

Watched the first episode of this last night, and suffice to say it did NOT disappoint. I'm a huge fan of TLOU 1 and 2 on the PS4, both were utterly captivating and set such a high water mark in video gaming, so I wondered whether this series could do it justice. Going by E1, this nine-parter is going to be absolutely sensational. Zombie apocalypse films are ten a penny so its not a particularly original genre, but this story is just so well crafted, with real heart as well as gore.

Those who have played the game will recognise many of the scenes, particularly during the harrowing opening half-hour or so. But even if you've never played the game, this stands up on its own terms as a bloody great piece of television. They've got the two main characters spot on. Pedro Pascal (The Mandelorian, Game of Thrones) is terrific as Joel, and the young girl who plays Ellie (Bella Ramsey) is excellent.

Looks like this is going to knock the (patchy / tedious) The Walking Dead into a tin hat. Do yourself a favour and check it out

Loved Pedro in Narcos so will definitely give this a shot. Spot on about the Walking Dead which just seemed to meander on with the last truly great scene being when Alpha put all the heads on the pikes!

I liked the 1st game, and I really disliked the 2nd game it was an awful story and a limited game. I'd expect this to follow suit, be good for one season then descend into mediocrity.

The games were absolute masterpieces, incredibly gripping and atmospheric. When I heard they were making it into a show I was full of hope but also pretty sceptical to see if it would live up to the name but my good god, after watching ep 1 they have absolutely nailed it. Incredible TV!

I'm glad this thread has been started.
SPOILER ALERT.
First up I don't own a PS4 and so had no idea what this show was about. Seeing the zombies during the show I was a bit 'what the heck is this' but stuck with it.
BUT! I kept asking the wife if we'd missed an episode. It jumped forwards without explaining how it got there. Suddenly there are zombies everywhere and the lead character seems to be in some sort of bricked prison, but how did he get there? There are characters (the women with the girl) who appear as if you should know who they are, and who is the girl tied down in the room, where did she come from?
I'll keep watching but completly lost the plot I'm afraid.

This is the same information the game gives you, some of your questions will be answered in due course but you have to use your imagination for what happened during the intervening twenty years between 2003 and 2023 for the most part.

Also it’s not a prison, it’s a quarantine/safe zone.

Quarantine/safe zone. People are getting executed. There seems to be no food, work or anything. They have ration books (?) I guessed it was a safe zone but why overnight curfues and all that? And where did it come from? One minute he's driving down the road the next he's in this compound.

Basically society collapses, martial law kicks in and eventually a makeshift military dictatorship takes over. The executions etc are to keep people in line and maintain a semblance of control.

There’s no modern commodities (thus a car battery is something worth risking your life for) and very little communication among surviving settlements. You earn your keep by fulfilling dogsbody work in exchange for shelter and protection.

Yes it looks bleak, but wait until the next episode when they’re outside :lolol:

Yes, I forgot about the battery. I'm guessing the CB radio thing (he jumped the queue) was about talking with other settlements, again not explained.
But will sit down and watch it.

I will add that in the games there’s little scraps of newspaper articles and diary entries which help to fill in the blanks and help join some of the dots, but yes, do stick with it!

I was up for watching this but am being put off by two of the first three episodes being 80 minutes long. If I had the much time I'd put a film on

The first half an hour is in 2003 at the point when the virus first breaks out - effectively "ground zero", the very first day/night it all kicks off. Then following that traumatic event it leaps forwards 20 years to 2023 where we pick up with Joel in the long-term aftermath of the pandemic. It's basically the same in the game, you're not missing anything.

3 episodes in - its a masterpiece.
E2 saw the first encounter with the "clickers" - the blind mutated infected, who hunt through sound. This had scenes of such nerve-shredding tension I could've cut diamonds with my brown-eyed starfish.

E3 takes a sharp tangent and a real turn of pace, as we see a survivalist and what turns out to be his partner do their best to make their lives in what remains of the remnants of an apocalyptic world that has completely collapsed.

There is a peaceful beauty to this show, just as in the game. You're viewing the aftermath of a pandemic that destroyed the world 20 years ago. Everything in every city is crumbling, overgrown, being reclaimed by nature. But behind that peace, there is always that terrifying danger of the infected still lurking.

If there is a better TV series this year I'll be amazed.

The games are that good, I would argue you shouldn't spoil them by watching this first!. I think it remains the only game which I would say has an excellent story. The rest are qualified by being a good story by video game standards.

But yeah the show is great too.
There's so many games that have excellent stories by any standards.

TLOU definitely stands out though.

It's an adaptation of a part of the game in which it's heavily implied these two men are lovers. The TV show just went and made it undeniable.

And it's one of the most beautiful 70 minutes of TV I've ever seen. Just stunningly well made.

Really enjoying this show when you think back to covid times it didn’t take long at all for nature to start reclaiming the planet.
Some of the scenery looks like they’ve borrowed from the TWD set apart from that a good watch.
