State Opening of Parliament Wednesday 17th July 9.30am
KING’S SPEECH, House of Lords - Wednesday 17th July 11.30 am

The King’s Speech, delivered by HRH King Charles III on Wednesday setting out the Government’s Legislative agenda for the year, will be the first test of the new Government with around 35 Government Bills expected to be included. Measures to encourage economic growth are expected to be at the heart of Labour’s reforms in a wide number of areas including:

• A “new deal for working people” in an employment rights bill.
• The Government is expected to introduce a comprehensive climate change package with large investment in solar and wind energy as well as not approving further licences for coal and North Sea gas. The Government is also expecting to announce the establishment of Great British Energy, a publicly owned company that will spearhead the energy sector into lower fuel prices, clean energy and lower bill prices for domestic consumers.
• Housing programme (already announce)
• NHS - measures to deal with Dentistry crisis, Mental Health provision and waiting lists
• Consultation into social service provision with aim of creating new National Care Service to reform social care
• Reform of the House of Lords (The House of Lords will need to approve this!)

After passing through the House of Lords (see schedule in 2nd link below), the King’s Speech will be then be debated in the HoC before being voted on (with Labour’s majority in the House, that will be a formality)

The whole State Opening of Parliament will be broadcast live on Parliament TV and YouTube.

I will take just one to start to make it easier for my dyslexia, I hope by saying that it won't derail the thread, although there were many others you could have pointed to.

I look forward to seeing where he draws the line with working people, I thought he was all about detail? What actually does he define as working people? He even classed himself as a working person didn't he?

Not at all.

This is what is thought will be included in the King’s Speech on Wednesday based on various newsleaks but no one will know any details until the King presents it to the House of Lords.

The Labour Party manifesto is in this link but don’t expect everything to be included or even referenced on Wednesday , the manifesto is a broad policy approach and longterm goals for the next 5-10 years - The King’s Speech is just legislative measures that will start implementing some of the manifesto pledges for this parliamentary year.

Edit - generally when politicians use the phrase “working people“, they mean everyone over school leaving age and under retirement age who is earning a working wage.

We had plenty of this co-operation etc. with the EU ... before we decided to leave.

He explained this before the election when he said he wouldn't raise taxes for working people.

Asked what he meant by “working people” in a radio interview on LBC on Tuesday, Sir Keir said: “People who earn their living, rely on our [public] services and don’t really have the ability to write a cheque when they get into trouble” he said.

Good news. Spiking a drink is to be a specific crime. My daughter in law was a victim and lost a night somewhere. Wicked crime, usually against women out on their own, that hasn't been taken seriously enough till now.

not a lot, Network Rail has been publicly owned for about 20 years.

I have also had my drink spiked, by mistake I think, a very unpleasant experience, not nice for anyone.

Very interesting, but I don’t think itll be much change really, take a look at LNER for what the new nationalised network is likely to be like.

That's my view. I think a lot of folk are under the impression that nationalisation means cheaper tickets. But the profit margins of the operators are small in relative terms.

I would also imagine that the largest government subsidies are invested in season tickets too. The only way, from what I can see, that prices would come down is with more government investment and subsidies.

I'm broadly in favour of public ownership, but I'm not convinced that things will improve for the railways. I actually think (tin hat time) that they are better now than they were before (excepting complex fair structures)

Understandably so, the question is obviously if a child that age is responsible enough to make important political decisions should they also be deemed responsible enough to do other things like driving, or serving on the front line, or being criminally responsible?

This is not something that should be rushed through without real consideration of the wider implications.

Do we need to combine the Labour 100 days thread with this one since it’s now become a more serious discussion? I thought this thread was about people’s personal experiences otherwise I wouldn’t have started the other thread.

Probably not much point have two threads going now.

(I posted all the stuff about the upcoming King’s Speech earlier but don’t mind deleting it and posting it on here instead)
