[Politics] The Labour Government

Johnny Ashworth may not have got his boyhood dream of becoming Paymaster General in the Labour government but he has got the gig of Labour together, tackling policy for their 2nd term in office.
Yep the Labour Right crony networks always look after people who have been soundly rejected by the voters, it's another way of telling you that your vote is worthless - see how Ed Balls was foisted upon us for years after Leeds voters kicked him out.

Hopefully Ashworth will leave the Bangladeshis alone in his new job

They made what clear during the election? And it'd also be helpful if you can provide some evidence for your claim.

Returning to the NHS now, and Starmer says he wants to look at "all sorts of reform" for the health service in order to preserve it.

"If we don't reform the health service we will be in managed decline," he says.

Under the Tory government, he says the NHS is in the worst position it's ever been in.

He adds that the NHS must be free at the point of use but should effectively use the private sector too.

Voting for Labour was voting for NHS reform and further use of privatisation.

They made no secret of this, unless you decided to ignore it, it is not a shock

Reform does not equal privatisation. Using the private sector -- which has been done for decades -- does not equal privatisation. They're two quite different things, yet you're assuming that they're the same.
What Streeting has said very clearly is that he'd use the private sector in order to get waiting lists down.
We'll see what transpires.
I did follow the election, and even heard that interview referenced in that article.

weird though, a right wing politican, economist, think tank bod say exactly the same, and its the end of days apocolypse for the NHS.
good to see people starting to wake up and accept a little private involvement in healthcare.

There's been more than a little private involvement in the NHS for 30 years or more.

Accept a little? I accepted paying for eye tests, glasses etc a long time ago. Eyes are part of my body as are my teeth. I pay NHS charges for my dental care, but I didn’t have to 30 years ago.
It‘s been happening for years.

Maybe, but Labour are in a better position to reform the NHS than the Tories, because they're trusted with it. Hunt said as much as his parting shot. What that reform amounts to, we'll find out with the Darzi report and how much of it is implemented. I sincerely doubt this will entail privatisation as @Kinky Gerbil seems to think/want, but am not ruling that out.
I also agree that the spectre of a privatised healthcare system is wielded unsubtly by those on the left, and don't mind Streeting using private healthcare providers to help deal with the backlog. That backlog is indicative of what a dire inheritance they've been left, and this inheritance demands an instrumental approach.
What I'd like to see is seeded into this debate that healthcare demand is rising by 4% a year due to demographic changes which necessarily entails a real-terms increase in spending if it is going to meet this demand uplift. Sure, AI, etc might help lower some costs, but this needs to be the key premise of the ongoing debate.

One of the things I liked about Labour’s campaign was the honesty in saying the NHS is ‘broken’ and more money on its own will not fix it. I don’t think Labour have a plan as such which is why they have started a review. At last we have a politician (Streeting) who recognises that the NHS is not sacred, is not working but admits he/she doesn’t have a magic wand.
To be fair, maybe ‘the plan’ is to determine what and where the problems and failures are and then work out how to fix them whilst hopefully ignoring any silly ideological barriers.
If so, then credit to Labour.

How do you red flag wavers feel about letting out criminals on our streets? Some only serving 40% of there term.
Starmer certainly isn't wasting time to take Britain to a further level of weakness, god help us all.
do you think the tories called the election early, before the public could learn of this particular example of their ineptitude,
or something else?
asset strip the nation and then run it into the ground,
is the penny starting to consider maybe beginning a slightly more downward trajectory yet, potty?

Newly elected Labour MPs are set to come under immediate pressure from the party’s left to defy the leadership by backing moves to scrap the two-child benefit cap ahead of the King’s Speech.
Momentum, the organisation founded to champion Jeremy Corbyn’s leadership bid in 2015, will on Thursday launch a lobbying tool aimed at persuading Labour MPs to support the push against the cap.

Thousands of the group’s members and supporters will be provided with a pre-written email to send to their Labour MP, or to Prime Minister Keir Starmer if they are based in a non-Labour seat, about the “no child left behind” campaign.
It is good to see that there may well be a possible change from Labour. It's a pity that it wouldn't be the end result being the cause of any U-turn, more the pressure from Momentum & Co.

You should remove the word 'Brain' from your username; you certainly seem to have had it removed from your head.

My mum had an operation under the NHS at a private hospital years ago, I guess that is what they mean by using the private sector. It is not a new thing.

Going to be a cold winter
Whitehaven Coal Mine - decision to go ahead was challenged.

New Government immediately drops out from defending the case on the basis that previous decision was an error of law.

What caused you to stop using your other account and use this one instead ? With your history on here it certainly can't be that you're embarrassed by the complete and utter drivel you post
What was his other account?

It's POTG under a different username.

Btw, folks, Rishi Sunak had issued enough North Sea licences to last for a couple of decades, so SKS saying he won't issue new ones isn't going to make us desperate for a while. The oil produced is sold on the open market in any case, so not the preserve of those living here.
What it does do is give us time to invest more in renewables.

On the cataract thread, more people had operations in a clinic used by the NHS than in the Eye Hospital on Eastern Road.
