Out of interest, is that a recent thing from a shrinking kids demographic, hence the two schools BHCC Labour council are closing?

15 years ago when we were starting the process, Balfour and Westdene were hugely oversubscribed. We know loads of people who lied by eg pretending they lived at their grandparents houses in the catchments.

Symptomatic of buy-to-rent landlords having free rein to turn family house after family house into HMO’s. Young families can’t afford Brighton now.

Perhaps solved in the long run. All the 2 unis student halls going up with loads more to come, should hugely dent that cash cow.

They are businesses, taking money from people, for a non essential service is not a charity. . . Prostitution is another example you may be aware of.

Aiding huge numbers of kids with SEN’s, who get lost in large classrooms in big state schools. Not for profit. I know they do a great job.

A far cry from visions of Eton and Harrow.

since when are charities defined as essential services? typically charities are non-profit organisations offering any services, which may be offered by public or private options. private schools offer education on non-profit basis, no shareholder, no dividends, so qualify as charities. the reason for applying VAT is precisely because Labour were told it would need complex legislation to strip them of that status, while VAT can be applied easily done in a Budget.

Ironically perhaps. VAT is an EEC/EC\EU concept and educational services including private provision are exempt from VAT under a directive.

However, I'm somewhat baffled at your reply.

I wasn't aware I,m promoting the " giving..or not giving, anything at all of the"Tories" .

My gripe is regarding the utterly spiteful attitude of one of the Labour Party witches, Rachel Reeves decision to stop the WFA.

It doesn't affect me at all as I live in France ( which is considered not cold enough ) and although I pay the majority of my taxes in the UK I am appalled at how spiteful the chancellor of the Exchequer is. I know several people in the UK who will be hard hit by this decision. You know...those people who have a small pension but too big to have pension credit, but have worked all their lives...paid their taxes and taken little or nothing from the state.

But please...crack on ...
You consider the first qualified Chancellor in a generation to be a witch . . . But you chose to live in a foreign country.

THat's mauve in my my book.

There are many ways the education system could attempt to progress neurodiverse students, but they are unwilling to explore or pilot new ideas. How many questions in test for example are written in a way that they are easier to comprehend for a dyslexic.
An extra 25% time would never have help me for example. Maybe 75% extra and the exam be split in two shift would have helped someone like me.
I can't speak for what happens in the UK but here is Australia considerations and adaptations are discussed with a care team of students' psychologists etc and a reasonable plan is created to accomodate their needs.

Like I say though schools are at the beginning of this journey with their understandings of neurodoversity growing and growing. I am interested to know your experiences with the UK system of identifying and creating accomodations for students. On speaking to colleagues and and friends in the UK I have been under the impression you guys were ahead of us in this regard.

I apologise for the long post but I admire your passion for this subject. I agree that more could be done sooner and that is going to take more people, money and understanding across the education system and wider community. I would urge you to join us in the fight. There are a growing number of educators who are working towards this goal and you would be a brilliant addition to that.

Tl/DR

there is a fight for understanding and equality for the neurodiverse community. I implore you to get involved, you are obviously passionate about it.

- vote for those that are funding schools better and working to improve education for everyone.
- join an advocacy group.
- get into schools and tell your story and what would have helped you and your family.

I'm not that much aware of prostitution in general, let alone the not-for-profit variety that you (presumably) know so well.

Most charities provide non-essential services. The National Trust, for example. The defining characteristics of a charity are that it provides a public benefit and it is not for profit.

I try not to get carried away by anyone or anything on this forum, as I hope you notice from my mostly😊 reasonable posts.
My remark re Scrooge Rachel was meant to be more of a dig than anything else, but perhaps it didn’t come over that way, for which I humbly apologise to all and sundry who presently worship at the feet of the Labour Party.
No need for capitals in your reply, it doesn’t become you. I once had a most noxious boss who used to resort to CAPITALS on occasion and this, along with his other gruesome aspects of management style made me lose any respect I may have had for him.
He was a true git, which I am sure you are not.👍😉

Are Labour trying to outdo the Tories by creating controversy after controversy? The Tories achieved this largely by incompetence but it’s starting to feel like a Labour policy all of its own

Most private schools are charities, not businesses.

It's generally stated that VAT is a tax on the individual, not the company. Changing the VAT rate is like changing the income tax rate for PAYE - it doesn't affect the company's profits in itself, it affects the amount the individual pays.
Why on earth should a school have charitable statue?
