Probably because we have a leader who the members want, but the MPs do not, whose position has become untenable, but will not step down. The party might even split apart. Looks like a mess to me.

How many of those who turned up support Jeremy Corbyn AND Caroline Lucas ? Great that so many want to participate in democratic decisions, not so great that they only have one vote come an election.

For sure we need PR - until then you have to stick with the largest progressive party

Where does 700,000 come from ? I thought Corbyn got just over 250,000 votes (~60%).

the only mess is with the Labour MP's they really do not know what what the electorate want
seems to me like they might have trouble finding over a hundred prospective Labour MP's to replace the blairites although out of over 600k members they surley will find some who want what the grass roots want

A lot of the rebel MPs are not Blairites. Besides, I'd say many of the mps, especially those in swing seats do know what the electorate want, and that is precisely why they are trying to unseat him.

Well it is since those 170 odd represent a lot of people, who are not just labour party members, or swp supporters.

Good for you and NewOld Labour, we'll see what the Electorate says when the time comes.

I haven't seen a hard left party voted into power in the UK in my lifetime but who knows?

Given average constituency size of 70,000 (approximately) suggests that 170 MPs represent nearly 12m people.

I know that's not the maths of the Labour leadership elections but it does put an interesting slant on the numbers!

Irrespective of the politics, it's surely self-evident, just from listening to JC in any national forum, e.g. Parliament or in the media, that he's a terrible speaker, pretty stupid and couldn't negotiate his way out of a paper bag.

Does anyone seriously consider him PM material?

If so, suggest you take a cold shower and stand in a corner with your D hat on........!

I'm no Labour supporter but would really like a credible opposition (and alternative) to the Government.

there's the problem, the rump of the Labour MP's understand of what a proportion of the electorate want, but the membership is being taken over by a group that understand what a smaller proportion of the electorate want. Corbyn and Chairman McDonnell simply wont appeal to vast swaths of the country with center-left views, just as UKIP wont appeal to the center right. they'll still get 200 seats from the north and a few other urban centers, its not enough to get anywhere near elected.

Have to agree with this. There seems to be too many left wingers that think having the support of a majority of the party equates to having the support of the required amount of the electorate. My union membership gives me a vote in any contest and it certainly won't go to someone I don't think has a cat in hells chance of winning a general election!

I'm up for replacing Corbyn but there's no chance I'll support Labour with Angela Eagle at the helm.

I support Conservative voted leave and i did not want Borris as Prime Minister i don't particularly want Teresa May as the next PM either....it's all up in the air on both the blue and red sides at the moment.....especially for the voters
