It doesn't help much but I juist did a google for "going underground" and it came up with "Songs for your funeral" - it may be me, but I found that a little amusing !

It was a cover version, from an entire album by various artists (Carnation was covered by Liam Gallagher and the blond bloke from Ocean Colour Scene who works with Weller a lot). Can't remember who acutally did it though

Just checked it out, and it was Buffalo Tom

If you download the free software for Spotify – A world of music. Instant, simple and free and do a search on 'Going Underground' it pulls up about thirty or so entries, many Jam versions and a number of covers of varying lengths and impressiveness. May well be in there somewhere.

Anorak time.
originally Going underground was only meant as the B side with Dreams of
Children the main song but owing to a mistake at the pressing plant
in France the songs got reversed. The rest as they say is history

Thanks mate ( genuinely ) truce ?

For sure. Got no problem with you whatsoever other than with your politics. And you with mine. Fair enough, that's how life is. Oh, and while this uneasy truce holds: should I sell or hold my Cairn Energy shares?

I would say that's bollocks.

Going Underground, ( not dreams of Children ) was played pre release on the wireless constantly for 2 weeks before being released, helping it go straight in at number 1 in the charts because of pre orders. ( I ordered it )

Trusting wikipedia ( if that's where you got it from) is like buying The Daily Sport to see what's really happening in Kosovo.

"...where the brass band play and feet start to pound.."

Good point well made! I was not aware of the Manfred Mann version, but trust me the Buffalo Tom one was pretty dire in my opinion.

Re. Going Underground/Dreams of Children, if my memory serves me correctly was it not released as a double A side? Promo videos were made for both tracks and that surely would not have happened for a standard A/B side release.

It was in fact a double A side, with perhaps Weller's emphasis on DoC, but as we all know, the pre-release hype was for GU, and the rest, as is wont to be quoted, is history...
