There was a topic of some interest on the local radio here today, that created a lot of interest. Basically the case was that Stoke-on-Trent has a poor image within the business world it fails to attract investment or retain jobs,so the following point was made what other cities/towns do you have an image of being good or bad ? You don't have to have visited them. Oxford has to me a good image where as both Wolverhampton & Coventry strike me as depressing.:wave:

Good - London, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Chester, Ripon, York.
Bad - Hull, Manchester, Norwich.

I agree with most of that - although I have no opinion of Ripon - and I rather like Norwich

I'll add:

Good: Oxford, Canterbury, Cambridge, Newcastle, Cardiff, Swansea, Worcester, Lincoln, Bristol, Leicester, Exeter, Sheffield

Bad: Liverpool, Sunderland, Derby, Nottingham, Middlesbrough, Northampton, Newport, Southampton, Portsmouth, Hereford

Middlesbrough has always seemed like the end of the world to me. Miserable city in decline living under a smog cloud

Hereford is a funny one.

One on hand, you have a fairly excessive chav population which, conversely, inhabit a quite interesting city. Many areas along the river are especially nice.

Good - London, Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, Chester, Ripon, York.
Bad - Hull, Manchester, Norwich.

Wakefield good
Norwich bad ???

I guess it's a game of opinions.

I really like Norwich, one of my favourite British cities to visit.

Can I nominate Wolverhampton and Ipswich for the bad list and Exeter for the good.

Although with any town or city, there are good parts and bad parts. I think Southampton and Portsmouth may not be pretty in places, but have some bloody good venues and drinkeries.

Norwich is BRILLIANT. I like it A LOT.

Chester has a better reputation than it is entitled to - a beautiful medivael city, but full of scouse chav underclass.

I work in the centre of and occasionally go out in Liverpool and its great. I've never seen any trouble whilst out. The city centre has been completely redone and there are plenty of smart bars/restaurants etc

Manchester is pretty good as well. Loads to do (gigs etc), and easy to get in and out of in the car. Much prefer it to London.

Old prejudices never die I guess.

Worst towns I've been to would have to include Gillingham, Dartford and most of the area inbetween. If Kent is the Garden of England then surely this particular part of the Medway towns is the compost heap.

Thanet, Sittingbourne, Margate, and worst of all, the Isle of Sheppey.

And at the other end of Kent, Dover is a bleak, despairing, hole.

Elsewhere in the country, places that will never lose their reputation (for different reasons) as crap include Middlesbrough, Burslem, Port Talbot, Swindon, Hull and Sunderland. And Croydon obviously :p

Will go with Chester,Shrewsbury and Norwich. There is no doubt a problem as many are saying the same. Brighton i find has upbeat about it and really Manchester has really come on over the last few years,in fact it was one off the best things the IRA ever did up here !! so lead to a complete re-build of much of the city centre.
