The worst place I've ever spent any amount of time in is Northampton. I spent 6 months of my life spending every weekend there and it was the absolute pits and a complete waste of my time.

Rugby is pretty shit, as is Taunton, other mentions Liverpool, Reading, Swindon, Croydon, Crawley (and other mid-sussex outposts), Gillingham, Southend (okay, all of Kent).

But nothing will beat Northampton.

Good: Bristol, Oxford, Manchester, Leeds, Cantenbury, Newcastle, York

Its interesting everyone seems to share the opinion of Swindon being a shithole. I had 3 years based in Wiltshire and look back extremely fondly of my time there. Granted Swindon is no Brighton but is it really that bad? I was out on the piss most weekends and not once did i see any bother or aggro. Admittedly its not the prettiest of towns but is it really in the same league as the likes of Hull, Grimsby, Middlesborough etc?

Whenever I see an Argus billboard about 'City' this and 'City' that, I always assume the story is about London. My fault, I'm sure :dunce:

Brighton (& Hove, if you insist) just doesn't strike you as a city. Doesn't feel like one at all. Even if it does have something apparently known as Fiveways Village. Not sure where THAT one came from

The most curious thing..
Liverpool's poor image stems mainly from the early 1980s recession which effectively destroyed the local economy as the docks collapsed, leading to the disaster of Hatton's Militant Tendancy taking over the city council. Also the Boys from the Blackstuff, although startlingly accurate in its portrayal of the urban desolation and despair that took hold, did not contribute to a positive image either.

That was a long time ago, and it is increasingly embarassing to have to listen to ignorant and prejudiced football fans who have never visited the place and fail to realise that things have changed in the last 30 years still singing about "signing on2 and "never get a job" etc. The city centre has been rebuilt in the last five years, and although the local economy is far too dependant on tourism, retail, and the public sector, it still gives off a much more positive vibe than much of the so-called affluent south.

Liverpool Tourist Information

Having said that the north end around Anfield still resembles a bomb site. Some of the streets about 300 yards from the Anfield stadium are still the worst slums I have ever seen.

PS. Much of Brighton in the late 1970s and 1980s was an absolute shithole. I have no idea what its like now, as I have barely visited in the last two decades - probably paradise.

Old prejudices never die I guess.

i think all the city centres of the major cities have been regenerated in the past decade or two, and where probably interesing vibrant places to begin with. its the areas around the centre, the sink estates and the not-quite-suburbs old council estates that are shit in these places.

I always got the impression that Leeds was grim and backward (from here more than anything!). Been there twice, liked it, still hate their football team though.

Birmingham matched what I expected in terms of grim, run down, empty sites, etc, etc but at least the people there seem to REALISE those problems so its very unpretentious. Not that it'd be easy to be pretentious in that environment.

The Fatherland
Chester is an odd place. During the day the centre is all twee, olde worlde and middle class. In the evening it turns into a battle field for lager swilling chavs.

I maintain an image of Brighton as an attractive place. As for Sunderland; "I despise you cos' you're filthy, but I loves ya cos' you're home", in the words of my favourite old pop record. We've a lovely beach but an unimpressive seafront.

Worst towns I've been to would have to include Gillingham, Dartford and most of the area inbetween. If Kent is the Garden of England then surely this particular part of the Medway towns is the compost heap.

Thanet, Sittingbourne, Margate, and worst of all, the Isle of Sheppey.

And at the other end of Kent, Dover is a bleak, despairing, hole.

Bullshit. You've not even covered it. Its probably the most depressing, boring, unattractive, drug fillled, decaying, semi-industrial, semi-rural, remote, uninvested in places i have ever had the misfortune to visit.

"Compost heap"? Give over. Thats a compliment for the f***ing rat-'ole.

...where as both Wolverhampton & Coventry strike me as depressing.:wave:

Can't argue about Wolverhampton. If the University, Wolves and Asda moved out of town there would be very little employment at all. A lot of the outlying suburbs are very run down, although there are some very nice areas because with the M6 is is very hand for commuting.

I've only been to Cov a few times, but the City Centere is very nice.
