Exactly right
Perhaps Hypia's role was undermined from the start with Sammy Lee departing within 48hrs. Maybe that was the catalyst where Sami needed a solid number 2 of his own and one with an excellent track record. If Lee had stayed who knows what might have happened?
My point throughout all of this debacle is that Football culture of today demands so much where paying large prices on attending and merchandise means that we (as fans) demand a return of investment, which is success. But how do you measure success when the club is aiming to be financially sustainable? (unlike other spending beyond their means - foundations of sand and all that). It also questions loyalty (of which we also demand) but is counteracted by impatience (back to the ROI thing). Throw in a manager (and number 2 who leaves very quickly) who has had very little say in recruitment, who also sees 'big' players leave the club and has joined us very close to the new season and you can start putting the pieces together. In this case, you could argue that Sami needed time, but time is a very precious commodity when you are staring into the abyss of League 1 (dramatic I know and is intended for effect). We gave our past 'young' managers time (Mullers, Poyet) but we were in the lower divisions where expectations were not as great as they are in this division (and with our relative recent success). A manager needs time, are we willing to offer this? Who knows, our success could be dropping down a league, building, promoting and gaining that momentum? Are we willing to accept that, or does our success depend on how much we pay at the gates where we demand much more than the club may be able to offer in the very near future?
