The Greatest opening scene of a film

Over there
As others have said. The interrogation of the farmer at the beginning of inglorious Basterds.
The opening to the watchmen with the massive fight scene berween the comedian and the unseen assailant, then as the credits role, there is kind of a mini film of how the watchmen were formed set to Bob Dylans "times they are a changin"
And then theres The D-Day battle at the start of saving private Ryan. This was particularly poignant for me as my grandad was a young Canadian soldier who stormed the beaches that day and everything he witnessed and later described to me of that day was all in those opening scenes. Astonishing stuff

Not seen anyone mention the opening sequence of Up - pure genius. Undoubtedly best ever start to an animated film.

Great call.

Some more (though I SWEAR we've done this very recently!):
-Manhattan with Woody Allen narrating and the George Gershwin music
-Annie Hall simple for the joke about the food being terrible, and such small portions!
-The Godfather matches Inglorious Basterds for tense conversations!

I go with Star Wars. Made for a generation when it could only be seen in the cinema; no pandering to a VHS/Betamax audience - big screen, big John Williams sound, sodding huge space ship. Still thrilling.

Great call.

-The Godfather

The opening to Up was lovely wasn't it? Everyone was talking about it when the film came out.

The Godfather's beginning, even the long party sequence, has really grown on me. Perhaps because you know what's going on, but it's identical in the book and captures its menace perfectly. After all, it's just someone telling a story at a wedding that turns on a sinister sixpence. Lovely.

The Moore Bond, ending with the Union Jack parachute is always class.

Casino Royale, either 'gritty' Craig in black and white.
Or the first action scene with the free running, t'is fantastic.

Hmmm... I've not seen IG but have seen the other three, SPR has a fantastic opening (it's a pity the rest of the film can't live up to it) but I can't recall the opening to either of the other two. Surely the "greatest opening scene" would stick in the memory of everyone who watched it?

Goodfellas does it for me

"As far back as I can remember,I always wanted to be a gangster."

surely the opening scene to Saving Private Ryan is in the cemetary and not the landing on Omaha beach
